Frame rust recall

Rust is rust and what you see as surface rust still weakens the metal Just paint areas right over the rust with grease with a foam brush. I use red grease which goes on clear. Do this yearly . Otherwise, it will rust more. Grease is non electrolytic and will not support any additional rusting. A coating that is not oil based can will just hide what is going on underneath. At least with grease, you can still see the surface and tell if it needs to be recoated. The areas you cover with grease will not get any worse.

 

Here's something to think about - This frame rust warranty expires in March 2016. After that...you're SOL.

From what I've been reading about the Toyota undercoating - they warranty the frame for another 5 years (you might want to call Toyota to confirm).

Soooooo .... Take your pick....
Don't do anything at all....and be SOL after March 2016 or have Toyota put the undercoating on and the frame be under warranty for another 5 years?

 

I've been watching this thread for months because I knew that my frame has had a rough life. I live it Newfoundland, Canada, we're an island that uses salt on the road about 6 months a year, not to mention the salt in the air from the North Atlantic. Found a dark spot today on my drivers side cab mount, looked closer and I seen a small crack. With the help of a screw driver it easily became a hole.

There are a few more places on the boxed section that I bet will poke through. I'll call on Monday to see when I can get it in for an inspection. I'm sure it will take a while to get a frame in. What's the chances they will give me a rental until the frame comes in?

 

I don't know if the rest of the frame looks as bad as that section, but what is shown is about the worst condition frame I've seen yet. As far as the rental, the routine has been if dealer determines the truck is unsafe, they should get you a rental right away, and keep the truck on the lot. If the truck is safe to drive, you drive it until the frame is ready.

 

Also seems like different dealers/techs have different thresholds for 'safe to drive'. I was told I was fine to drive mine while I waited as long as I didn't tow anything or do any 'serious off-roading"

 

It was fine for you to drive.....I wonder if it would be fine for one of their family members to drive.

Do these guys ever stop to think, the crash tests that your truck model year had to go through....no longer applies.

 

These new leaf springs aren't impressive. In November of 2007, I had the TSB springs installed (3+1) under warranty. Those things were awesome and gave my truck had 1" rake.

These new springs, they are 3+1 but......no rake..... and we just loaded up a snow blower in the bed, and I was surprised to see the bed sag a little. Really?? How disappointing!!

 

Agree. I put my new set of 5100's @ 1.75, in expectation that the new leafs were going to be an inch higher (based on much reading from all the previous 3+1 TSB replacements), and keep me @ 1" of rake.

I was also disappointed to find the the new 3+1's were the same height as my 10 year old 2+1's. I just had an AAL installed to compensate for my unmet expectations.

 

How are more frames still rusting???

I bet there will be inspections of 2009+ Tacomas in the near future. Like BlueT said earlier, I think there is a reason that Toyota did a slight redesign on the '16 that utilizes the same frame for the 2009+ Tacomas. Toyota used the same frame from 2005-2016 basically.

 

I agree. I think we will see frame rust for a long time coming. Some of these trucks don't even have 50,000 miles yet.

 

And what really chaps my ass is I thought changes had been made to the frame starting in '13. I have a set of bolt on sliders sitting in my house that I'm afraid to install because I'm not sure if it will void my frame warranty.

 

Called the dealer this morning to get my truck in for the inspection to see if they will replace the frame. The girl booked me for Thursday, continues to say that it will take 2 days and they will have me a rental. Seemed weird to me that it would take 2 days to look at a hole so I asked if they we're going to replace everything then, she didn't know the answer and said that it takes 2 techs, 2 days to do it. Seems fishy, that in the span of a week I could go from finding a hole to having everything replaced.

 

I got the recall for my 06 and I'm gonna get it taken care of soon, I see rust on my frame and I'm not to happy about it

 

It only takes 2 days with 2 techs once the frame comes in. The dealer orders the frame when each truck comes in with s bad frame. The wait time depends on location and how many are in front of you. Mine took 5 months. Some have waited a year. My truck was bad where I had a rental the entire time.

 

Well that makes me pretty dag gum nervous, 5 months? Holy shit

 

Yep mine was discovered on a routine oil change

 

Saw the same thing, with my 5100's set @ 0 and Eibach springs in the front, truck is sitting nose high for now. The new rear springs are weaker, actually show more reverse arch. Dealer wouldn't put my AAL on so I'm waiting a few weeks for the truck to settle in and then I'll install it.
