Day 16 (from when I dropped it off)
Picked up the truck today. Did a quick inspection of the body and noticed burn marks on the front grille panel. :censored: Looks like someone was welding something nearby. My hood was clean so it happened when the piece was lying on the floor. :sorry: The service guy apologized and took some pictures, which he was bringing to the service manager to have addressed. I was in a rush to leave to get my kids from daycare so I couldn't wait. I also want to drive the truck a bit to see what other issues might arise so it can all be taken care of together. Initial drive felt good but when I went to back into a parking spot I noticed something rubbing. Was only happening when I was at full turn and going in reverse. :facepalm:Will have to inspect it tomorrow in the daylight. Happy %#$& New Year.o_O

Edit: Forgot to mention that they didn't try to nickle and dime me. The broken tail lights were covered under warranty. The radiator was covered as well. (These were items they broke when taking my truck apart.) No charge to install my AAL and they covered the cost to overnight the center bolt, which they also broke during install.

    Work done:
    • New frame, brake lines and new hardware
    • Leaking timing cover fixed
    • New water pump
    • New spark plugs
    • New taillights and housing
    • New radiator and hoses
    • Installed new 5100 shocks and springs (mine)
    • New 4-leaf pack along with installed AAL (mine)
    • Full flush and new fluid for trans, oil and radiator.
They also gave me new gaskets for the oil pan, both valve covers and the exhaust. I paid for none of this. The only cost to me was the timing cover fix, spark plugs and a hose. Excellent service at Interstate Toyota in NY.

I just got back from the dealer. They are ordering a frame. My main rear seal is leaking and needs to be replaced. They quoted me $1060 for the job. This seems crazy! What would the job be normally? My service guy wasn't there but gonna call him later. Shouldn't it be parts and maybe a little labor?

Hey! Sorry I didn't want to read through this entire thread... Does anybody know if this recall is good in BC, Canada?

Also, does it matter if I bought my truck from the previous owner?

My frame is quite rusty. It's a 2006

    Hi WormSquirt
That recall is also good for Canada.
Though,if I were you,i would start by talking to Toyota Canada.
They will ask you to go to your nearest Toyota Dealer to have the Tacoma evaluated.
    Best of luck
    Regards

Personally , I think folks need to consider as a group a lawsuit for buyback - I traded mine and feel bad for whoever buys this pos wannabe truck . That video above should be sponsored into a nationwide public service commercial by every Taco owner out there , that would stop this bs with manufacturers quick .
I hope in the end , one way or another Toyota does the right thing - not holding out for much hope though ....

Yeah 2008 campaig is almost over (until March 31, 2016) what will be interesting to see is if 2009+ trucks get lucky to get new frame. Looking at the lawsuits progress chances are slim to none.
With Toyota truck sales slumping spending additional $13k per truck seems unlikely.
If they dont replace 2009+ trucks resale value is going to plummet.

It doesn't cost "13k" for Toyota to replace a frame. I guarantee you most of the cost is associated with labor, and shipping of the frames. And how do you know the status of the lawsuit?

If you call owning 75% of the midsize market slumping. Toyota has always made it right up to this point. I wouldn't expect anything else moving forward. They aren't going to give up this segment.

Toyota HAS been doing the right thing so far. Replacing frames on 10 year old trucks is pretty good if you ask me. I don't think we'll see this issue with gen3's. If we do, someone at Toyota should be fired.
Btw, my 2008 'cold weather ' frame is just fine.

I think if you do a little googling, you'll see that high strength steel is more rust resistant. IMHO, they say they did it to make it lighter yet nothing is lighter with the gen 3. I think they did it for rust control of the frame and body parts. Shit, they aren't going to come out and say that So, they did it to "lighten the truck" ... :lalala:
Assuming it does work well, you could be looking at a good ten to 15 rust free years in the rust belt with little or no effort. It will be much more rust resident then the gen2 for sure
