    Hi guys,

I have searched a bit on this topic but haven't found good concise answers to the following questions.

    (1) What exactly was the root cause for the frame rust on 2009 and earlier trucks. I know that Dana, the frame supplier, admitted some fault and paid some money to Toyota, but how exactly did they mess up?

    (2) In 2009 Toyota changed frame suppliers. Who is making the frames now and what has Toyota done (or doing) to avoid this problem in later model vehicles?

FYI...I listened to the live chat on the intro of the 2016 model and no one thought to ask about the earlier frame issues and how they were fixed. Just telling me it was "strengthened" seemed disingenuous.

Thanks for good answers and a pox on the first guy who says moisture and road salt as the root cause.

How do you know Toyota changed frame suppliers ?

Well if this is true that my frame on my 2015 in fact won't have the same issues as the 2005 to 2008. I will shut up and not speak of the frame rotting issues ever again. And that is a promise.

Same year truck as you...same concern on my part.

Hoping to get a better feeling on the rust issue and avoid running to the DIY car wash every time they salt the roads up here.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I don't know if that's supplier issue. I can not speak for later trucks but my 2007 had clear problem with paint quality. I repainted frame with heavy duty enamel and where I could reach my frame is solid. So it can be done.
Second item is at the front toyota made holes for manufacturing they are in the spot that allows for snow and rain to get inside the frame and make rust from inside. Later trucks have plugs there I simply covered mine with tape.

Ya...searched the forums pretty well got insufficient paint / contaminated anti-corrosion bath etc. but nothing that sounded definitive.

    I have a couple questions

    That reports talks about money the Dana needed to pay Toyota for failed Tacoma frames , but the frames in question are the 1995-2000 Tacoma frames , and that Dana only sold the plant where these particular frames in question were made so ;

    1) Are they liable to Toyota for the now 2005-2008 frame replacements

    and

    2) is there any info that the 2nd gen frames were / are made at this same plant

    and

    3) if the 2nd gen frames to 2015 were made at this plant , what evidence is there that the build spec or frame coating was changed ?

Why not if concerned about it go and have a place spray a under body coating on your trucks... There new enough where rust shouldn't be a issue now but sealing it up now will help slow the chances of rust in key areas... We have a place here in Wisconsin that puts this extremely thick rubber coating on and I've seen a car first hand that had it that was 10 years old and it was spotless under neath... Best part was everything came loose like it was brand new... Being in the salt induced rust belt I've accepted the fact you either do what u can to prevent it or just accept it

I plan on coating the frame in the spring, but was just curious as to why I was going to need to do this and why the factory was unable to prevent the corrosion in the past.

truck frames rust. whether it rusts in 10 years or 20 years, its going to rust. if you take care of it (coat it every spring, wash it in the winter every week) it will last forever. if you dont do anything, it will rust sooner than later

    Nadda, except mags
I have a 1998 Tacoma that I bought in 2008 (previously a southern USA truck) and it has zero frame and body rust and I live in a rain forest that sporadically salts the roads in the winter. I have crawled underneath the truck every spring since got it and sprayed Fluid Film on the frame rails, truck bed and inside the panels and so far I've not had any issues with rust at all. I just bought a 2006 Tacoma and the first thing I did was spray the underbody with Fluid Film as well. An experienced local body man told me about this rust inhibitor.
