    Nothing yet...
I just bought a 2016 TRD Sport (access cab) with 191k miles on it... got it for a pretty good price considering the price of Tacoma's lately. This is my 3rd "3rd gen" Tacoma.

I checked it pretty thoroughly and test drove it for about 150 miles. The dealership was going to throw in a 6 month/6k miles powertrain and I paid $150 extra to make that 12 months/12k miles.

My only concern is the rust. I looked on the carfax and it had the frame sprayed at 161k miles. I'm thinking I will need to get a wire brush and get all the flakes off and grab some good paint to cover the rust... but has anyone done this themselves? Thoughts from the experienced appreciated.

The receiver hitch is the only part that looks like it needs any attention. Id wire brush it good and use an old screwdriver to pick off the stubborn flakes, then paint with POR15 or coat with Fluid Fil as you see fit. If you really want to get into it you can take off the black plastic under the license plate and clean that area too above the hitch. That tends to hold dirt and moisture.

Hitch receiver looks fubar af but everything else looks very superficial.

For a 2016 with 191k thats pretty much as good as ur gunna get.

Here's my 2016 access cab with 69k miles on the odo...it lives outside in the rust belt.

What did the frame get sprayed with at 161k? If it was fluid film you'll need to stick with that because I don't think anything else will stick. Besides sanding, priming/paint spot treatment.

There was a recall for rust belt states to spray something in the frame and add some plugs. I had mine recalled and fixed.

For rust belt, that looks great. You must be using fluid film or something :)

Wire brush, or wire wheel any rusted areas clean as possible, then use a rust converter like rustoleum over it. Once dry paint it with a chassis black paint. Once cured and dry, I'd spray some rp-342 cosmoline over it.

It's mint, nothing to worry about. Even the hitch is just surface rust.

Frame doesn't look that bad in picture, but you could do what you mentioned. Hitch, I would pull, sand blast/and powder coat. Same with oem skid, or find oem takeoff.

Drive it and be happy. A little surface rust is nothing to be concerned about.

Grind on the hitch receiver until you think all the rust is gone....and then grind some more. Make sure you scrape all of that goop that's caked on the seems off too. Whatever it is seems to be attracting and holding moisture.

    all tore up already
Sprayed due to recall, just some wax and some plugs. Frame looks great tbh, I wouldnt go creating a problem where one doesnt exist. If you are concerned start hitting it with a hammer and see if any part sounds weak

I just do Krown rustproofing (or similar) once or twice a year... I also rinse off the undercarriage with water often during winter, I dont care if it takes off a bit of the rustproofing... From my years of experience with cars and rust, I found that doing the pre-winter undercoating and never rinsing off the undercarriage doesn't work as well at prohibiting rust.

This is when I'd start worrying about a rust belt frame! The OP has no issue!
