If you had said Iowa first, it would have colored the responses. More reddish in fact.

It's still savable but what are you willing to do to stop it and what is long term goal.

Plus, back to towing? Towing what?

Just a few more pictures on the inside of the frame. Is sandblasting and getting repainted solve this or is it too far gone? I know the engine will outlast my Jeep's which is mainly why I'm interested. I'd like to sue it for overlanding out here in the Rockies so I definitely need the frame to hold up.

It's savable but won't tow 5K#s through the mountains.

    Trade for a Tundra.

I’d steer clear, you don’t have a hope of a new frame, and while it might look ok, the big issue with these frames is they rot from the inside out due to poor lamination among other things, mine looked fine on the outside then all of a sudden there’s a hole and other mushy spots. Luckily I’m getting a new frame but a truck that old that no longer qualifies I wouldn't buy unless it were near spotless and preventative fluid filming or such like would actually be worthwhile.

mine was 6 years old when I bought it, and the frame looked better than this one. I fluid filmed it every year since, and I still got the hole.

    Stay away.

    Buy it for resale.

Even if you need to use a bank. I'm sure not saying to keep the Chrysler product.

You need to check inside before buying.

Like I mentioned previously, find out the production date. If it was built before 12/05, there's no point in even looking any closer at the frame. Rust + potential head gasket failure + potential motor mount failure=run.

true. I sure have seen some '05s really beat the odds though.

Drive shaft's bit them both early on.

There you go, COyotabrothers. Drive the Jeep to Ohio, park it in RLMoody's driveway, and say, "show me the money".

I think the replies saying that you need to see the inside of the frame are on track, particularly the boxed in section up by the cats. I don't know if I would feel good about it until I could do some hammering around on it with a screwdriver into the worst areas.

If you got it I would get a needle gun and then get any scaling/ delaminating off with that. Then get some rustproofing primer/ paint. Finally, coat it with some fluid film or woolwax. I did a similar treatment to my 06 that came from Ohio and New York. I bet I probably had 10 hours of work in it by the time I finished, but it will be well worth it in the long run. That one looks a fair bit worse than mine did when I got it- mine had a frame replacement, but don't think the owner had touched it since.

It's on the end of the spectrum where it might not be worth it, but also not to far gone to save, unless there is something hidden in that area by the cats that gets the most spray and heat cycling.

I would also check all your 4wd actuators to see if they are all working well. Rear locker actuator should be checked too.
