Has anyone replaced safety caps on 05 taco frame themselves?

If so what did you do for the boxed part by the CATs that rusts from inside out?

Did you cut it open and then clean and remove rust inside then weld it back up then install the safety caps?

It seems if you didnt get rust stopped inside it would just continue no matter how good a safety cap on the outside is installed.

Those caps were junk. All they did was trap mud inside the frame. Had to take mine off when I was putting on my sliders and found a crap ton of mud. I leave it open and have the truck on an incline and just hose it out every now and then

Could you please post a picture of the boxed part you now have open?

Not entirely sure if this is relevant. My frame rotted out from the bottom side of the boxed frame portion from the cross member just rear of the cab mount and again from the cab mount up towards the front. I used a Safe T Cap repair method to fix it and have had great luck so far (Just over a year now)

I cut out the bottom section that was rotted out and welded the safety cap over it, while I had the bottomside cut open I cleaned up the inside of the boxed frame as much as I could and sprayed Eastwood Internal Frame Coating up and down that section all the way to the forward most part. I coated the inside of the safety cap attachment as well leaving a 1/4" buffer around the edge for welding. I just finished cleaning out my driverside boxed frame portion - used an older snowbrush to loosen as much flaking rust and then pressure washed and compressed aired it all out. I'll be eastwooding it this weekend if I have time and it should be fine but I have the safe t cap for the driverside in the barn if needed.

You can read about it here:

ln the end there is only so much you can do without replacing the whole frame. Those plastic plugs toyota includes with their recalls only trap moisture and debris in so I don't suggest those. Ideally park the truck on a slight incline and pressure wash the crap out of the boxed area of the frame, then used compressed air to get whatever you can out.

This is extremely relevant, just kind of details been wanting. And you were able do this with the frame still on the truck?

Have you heard of Rust Convertor ?

Reading about it and its a chemical reaction that eats the rust or something.

    One user said:

11 gauge steel is thickness of safety cap and this other user is making their own safety cap out of thicker 3/16.

Currently repairing my frame now.... all fab'd by me.... I will have an entire 4×8 sheet of 3/16 welded on the back of it...

Anyone know the thickness of the metal where the boxed part of frame by CATs is?

11 gauge safety cap seems rather thin to me.
