A friend of mine is doing a frame swap for his 98 tacoma, 2.7l. He got his new/used frame and theres some differences.

I think the frame is a 97, as there was a change up i heard? Anyways, the engine sits further back, the engine mounts wont line up, the angles are wrong. On top of that, the transmission mount is half a hole out.

Any one know if there was a change up? also if it is just the mounts, and we get that sorted, will the engine hit the firewall?

Engine mounts won't line up? It must be for a v6 then. If the transmission mount doesn't line up the donor truck could've been a manual or auto respectively.

The v6 mounts differently than the 4 cyl one does, thus the frames are not intercompatible.

Edit: I misread your post, sorry.

Ive never seen a frame be different between engine groups before, that is odd. I think he is going to cut off the original perches and weld them on the frame in the correct location.

Other then the perches being in the wrong place, are there any other differences between the 2?

Why did they change the frame for v6 and l4? anyone know?

The frames are different because the v6 is just a bigger engine. You have to re-weld the engine mounts a couple inches back to accommodate the 4 cyl engine block due to the size difference.

You will also see a difference in transmission type. A manual transmission will have the crosssmember closer to the engine due to the smaller size, while an automatic transmission will be farther back due to the more elongated size.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Bigger in displacement but physically shorter than the 4cyl, the four cyl fills the latitude of the engine bay pretty closely, the V6 has a bit more room, hence why it can even manage to have an exhaust pipe cross over behind the engine over the bell housing without contacting the firewall. Mounts on the frame had to move to accommodate the 4cyls extra space requirement due to it's 4cyls being all on the same plane.

Yep, not a problem. Thanks for the answers. I will tell him to get his welder out.
