Bought my truck in central Texas in 2013. Owned almost 10 years and not a spec of rust. It is so hot, people do have paint issues if you're the type to never wash/wax your car, though. The 115+ degree summers will kill your paint if you don't protect it. Frames down this way are not a problem though, unless you live off the coast. I've heard of some beach goers that live in Corpus, etc complaining about rust on the forum in the past. But they live a stone's throw from the ocean.

We don't have basements in the south, so that's where our man cave is

I live in NE Ohio and salt and this new chemical brine destroys cars fairly quickly. I could never understand why people in this region pay the prices they do for new cars and them watch them desinigrate in 5 or 6 years. I like how the auto manufacturese now put all the plastic they do on the lower bodies to hide whats happening underneath it. I only drive base model vehicles because of this. A couple years ago I had to get rid of my 04 Corolla because of excessive rust underneath. The gas tank was falling out because everything was rusted away around it. When you opened the trunk the wheel wells were completely gone on both sides. Because of the giant rear bumper covers the car didnt look bad at all. Even the drivers door rubber was worn out from the body sagging. That little car with 180K still ran great.
I have a 17 Tacoma that I drove through the first 2 winters and regret doing. Its a constant battle now every spring to keep the frame rust free even while sitting parked over the winter because once it started it wont stop. The frame was also treated during the recalls. That was a joke. I wont use fluid films because of the mess and will just continue touching it up as needed. Its still extremely clean.

West Central FL here. My truck has spent its life in garages in Ocala and Tampa area. No rust or paint fade on mine but the paint is generally cooked off of Tacomas forced to live outdoors. I cringe when I read how you northern guys have to use an acetylene torch to remove fasteners because I’ve yet to even need penetrating oil to wrench on anything. Ocala seems to be a heaven for old Tacos, I see everything from ratty old farm trucks to nearly pristine 1st gens here. There’s usually clean frames for sale around here too.
