I didn’t know about any of these cases until after all of this went down and I went to seek legal advice and had consultations with a couple lawyers. They looked this info up for me and told me where to find it.

I’m going to have back out of this thread. I can’t add anything else to it.

I couldn’t afford to lose $76k and damn sure couldn’t afford a lawyer to get it back. So any advice I’d give you, would be bad advice, that would likely have you submitting for a change of address to the state penitentiary.

Good luck man. Hopefully you get your money back with enough to buy another truck. Yours is gone.

Do you have anything in writing, like a contract or sales invoice or even a general build plan written down to show an agreement? If not, it will be hard to work this in a court setting. He could claim to be a VERY expensive welder and his job is complete. Especially after you took the truck back. What a crummy situation....

A handshake deal holds absolutely no value in any possible future litigation.
Any attorney that even entertains your case is taking you for a ride just like the shop did. Cut your losses.
    Expensive lesson learned for sure.

sounds exactly like what Rock solid toys did. Sorry but if your fronting that kind of money i would need legal papers signed and the deed to his shop as collateral.

Jesus Christ, what a whirlwind. If I were a betting man, I'd say there's more to both sides of this story. $76k isn't a small job, and no one shells out that kinda cash up front without a real contract on agreed work. Sounds like you need to take that contract to someone who can do something about it and get the ball rolling as soon as you can, because we all know you won't get that money back overnight. And if you did front the money over a handshake deal, this is a damn expensive lesson unfortunately.. This is a lose-lose situation; my advice, salvage what you can and lawyer up.

Yes there’s always two sides to the story but if he didn’t want to finish the build and didn’t buy any parts or materials for my truck, then he should’ve been able to give me all the money back that I gave to him no matter what his situation is. It wasn’t his money to use for personal use, if that was the case.

Any decent moral human would see it exactly that way. Con men? Not so much. Good luck with the legal recourse but I wouldn't count on seeing that money again.

First off, let's not be keyboard warriors and threaten violence. Not a one of you smart men would risk going over to fight the guy, going to jail, might get your ass kicked or shot. Most shop owners that I have worked with have a "garage Glock" just for dumbasses like that...and they would be totally justified.

What most likely happened is the shop owner was over his head, to many projects that didn't make a lot of money (or lost money) and then ended up filing bankruptcy. If the shop owner has an LLC, you can sue the company....but like others have stated if the shop is financially ruined.

I did part time in a performance diesel shop for Cummins powered trucks. We built sled pullers, drag racing, or whatever. These builds would request 30-40% down to cover at least parts. A lot of these builds were 50-100K dollars so for someone to put down 76K for a trophy truck build is just scraping the bottom of that barrel (150-250K). Our motor builds could be 20K+ and a transmission to hold that kind of power is at least 10-15K depending on power level.

Yes, thank you for reiterating just how much money goes into building custom high end machines.
