I'm surprised you're getting another tacoma. Your previous posts regarding your truck suggest you don't like your truck.

You're already getting a new TRD, that's going to have the smoked HLs. BHLM'ing those is an extra pain as the "smoke" needs to be removed prior to painting. You may be better off keeping the TRD stockers, then when you're ready "acquire" a non-smoked version, BHLM those, then sell the smoked ones. You'll probably end up being money ahead in that kind of deal.

But, you've already said that you're time constrained, so maybe that won't work well. It just seems bad $$$ sense to me to trade your BHLMs for the smoked ones straight away.

Not true. Any multi-surface rattle can adheres to the bezel just fine. The "smoke" is just a different shade of "chrome" reflector material on the bezel.

No, it's a film over the standard chrome. Painting may adhere at first, but chances are it will end up peeling away over time.

Isn't the smoked headlights the same thing just a different shade so why would sanding them down and painting them not work?

x2. no matter what it is, film or shaded chrome, you should sand anyways to get best adhesion.

No problems for me yet, and I don't see why there would be...inside the headlights is a sealed environment with little in the way of perturbations beyond heat and pressure changes...I don't know what would cause this sudden peeling other than heat on a paint that can't take it...use a decent quality rattle can (Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.) and it'll be fine.

You may very well be fine then. Problems that I've seen with painting over a film usually start showing signs within a short period of time (bubbling, cracking, peeling). Glad it worked out for you, but personally I would still be concerned enough not to do it. Also, IMHO, it just doesn't make $$$ sense to paint over a tinted set, too much of a market for them still. Sell for 200, buy a chrome set for 100, or some set of numbers...

But, everybody has their own set of circumstances that they make decisions from, I'm sure if it didn't make sense to you, you wouldn't have done it.
