Instead of associates degrees from free community colleges, I would rather see us take a page from FDR's book and implement a WPA type program. Teach skills and build infrastructure as opposed to teaching theory from a textbook and earning a degree that really isn't opening any new doors. This is coming from someone currently working on their masters degree.

Good point. The navy ship yard is hiring 1500 workers but they are in the skilled trades like welding etc.. An associates in arts wont teach you that

Yes, free Trade schools too. Why not? Oh, because that is now looked down on in today's world.

Cuba isn't socialist...it is communist. How about we look at the northern European Socialist Countries, like Sweden, Norway and Denmark? Free education, free medical care, high standard of living? Or don't those count.

We used to have a fantastic network of free trade schools, in Connecticut we called them "Technical High Schools" and you would come out with a trade and a high school diploma. However, that system got cut back in the 70's when we could no longer employ all the graduates in the local factories and as tradesmen. The one in my area was Eli Whitney Tech, named after a local hero.

And in Connecticut we still have the virtually free community colleges that teach vocational skills, like automotive technician, plumbing, electrical work and the like.

However, one of the biggest opponents to the low cost education are the technical schools that live off student loans and have a very high dropout rate and worse repayment rate...support by our friends in Congress.

    As always, follow the money.

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have. Thomas Jefferson

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe. Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. ¬Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.¬Thomas Jefferson

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." Thomas Jefferson

"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government." Thomas Jefferson

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." Thomas Jefferson

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Thomas Jefferson

"To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical." Thomas Jefferson

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." The Federal Reserve Bank (The FED) is a private bank." Thomas Jefferson in 1802:

I agree 100%...when do we stop giving churches the ability to operate without paying taxes? Better yet, why do churches get a free ride when everyone else has to pay?

Cuba isn't the only country you guys generally term to be socialist , what about Sweden , Norway , Finland or Germany ?

also , Cuba suffers from economic isolation thanks in large part to US sanctions

Free Trade Schooling would be a great idea as the participation in trades is falling while demand is growing

cuba suffers from a socialist/communist regime dictatorship, ...just like Venezuela and much of the Central and South American countries... ...hardly models for human/individual rights and economic/marketplace growth...

disagree w/ the former, ...agree w/ the latter...

...as mike rowe has been saying for a long time, and has fallen on too many deaf ears... the problem we've had is that educational "institutions" have been selling the snake oil of "everybody needs to go to a prestigious 4 year college", ...to the point of ridiculous saturation, and an inflexible one-size fits all cluster of failure... now after decades of this "programme" (or program? :D), we've got a bunch of precious little snowflakes who have shelled out thousands and thousands of dollars for degrees w/ little marketplace merit, ..and now find themselves struggling to get jobs, living w/ mommy and daddy... :(
