Yes it is 0W20 in the 2.7. I would like to watch them work on it but this dealership isn't set up for it, they say. I know they changed the filter because I noted the position of the original filter and the new one had changed. Also I can pretty much tell by the color of the oil on the dipstick that they change it, as it's so light after a change that you can barely see the oil on it. After the first change I pulled out the dipstick and thought they didn't put any oil in it. Then I saw the oil on the stick when I got my reading glasses. It's hell to get old.

I just changed it today and man that oil filter was on there actually bent my oil filter wrench getting it off. Put in about 5.5 quarts and uploaded the record onto Toyotas website.

So after you get the first filter off from the Factory, and you put on a new one. Are they easier to take off from that point on?

I don't trust the guys that change oil. I've worked at dealers for 25 years and they don't pay the lube guys a lot of money. I believe you get what you pay for so to answer the OP's question, I used Mobil 1 and a high quality oil filter on my first oil change a few weeks ago. JMO.

Yea, they don't want (owners?) In the repair areas. When I asked just to see my own oil being put in, they didn't fuss. Put a little (pressure) ;), on them, nicely. Most will try,, to accommodate. I is an insurance issue you know.

so you "save" 250 bucks over the course of the 5 oil changes they give you..... I would much rather spend the 250 bucks to know that the job is done right.

I save all my receipts and video document before and after each oil change / document all work done on my truck in an excel document... not much disputing whats been done to my truck there.

Hey 14taco4x4, I know about the online records. I think it's a good idea to keep recording maintenance through the company even after toyotacare is used up. There's probably guys on this site that know for sure, but I think those records even show up on Carfax? My son bought a 2012 GMC denali 2500 4x4 and it showed up on it. As long as its recorded through the company it showed up, even though he did some of the work.

I think they do okay. Changing oil is not rocket science. But I certainly do not ridicule anyone for doing it himself. Sorry I sounded like a cheapskate.

I'm a big fan of Mobile one, but I always use dino oil for the first 5-10k for break in. Might not be needed, but has always worked for me. I used the first free oil change and do the work myself now.

I trust myself more than the oil jockey the dealer uses. Don't think your getting an ASME certified technician to change your oil.

I don't think I've heard anybody disputing ( self service) oil changes? Its harder for some to do that though, don't you know. :). It is a good idea to log it in to Toyota's website. And excel is an excellent idea also.

I ended up doing it myself and uploading it on the toyota records. I take pride in doing it myself even though it was freezing and raining its always good to get some bonding time with your truck. Im still shocked at how tight that filter was i can't believe it bent the wrench. Oh well from now on there hand tightened.

You pay the cost of the oil. And Toyota uses Mobil one.

Only the 4 cylinder tacoma motor calls for synthetic on the books. The 6cyl tacoma calls for 6qts 5w20 conventional which I think is absolute shit.. If you ask for synthetic they use 6qts 0w20. I think I paid like $25 or less for synthetic last week when I brought my truck in for the 10k/12month service, which I noticed they didn't give me a checklist like they did the first time and didn't rotate my tires (I know because my RR wheel has a huge gash from when I was wheeling), so who knows what else they didn't do. I was a little upset about that so I said something and they said it was done to which I kindly disagreed and asked the service manager to talk to the tech that worked on it. I asked him if he rotated my tires he said yes we rotate them every 5k service. So I asked him "how exactly did you rotate my tires? Did you unmount each tire while the wheels were on the truck?" He answered "no I rotated the wheels"

I shot a glare over to the service manager, looked back at the tech and said "okay... So why wasn't my damaged right rear wheel moved foward to the front right..." Needless to say he choked in front of the manager who said to fix it and I said no need I'll go home and do it myself.

the one and only time they changed my oil they forgot to put oil back in the truck and almost started it. Luckily i was standing right there discussing the driveline vibration TSB with the head mechanic, yelled at the oil change boy and the head mechanic for this bullshit.... as i already had to provide my own tools for driveline measurement, and had to coach the head mechanic on how to actually do the measuring. Needless to say i dont trust a dealership as far as i could throw the truck.
