Ok so i dont have a 4x4 but my dad just bought a 2011 4x4. He was wondering if there is a way to do a manual Hub or a way to make the 4x4 "free". I remember in my old Toyota i had manual hubs and when unlocked they were "free" and got better mileage in summer, then could lock them in winter so i could shift into 4x4 without getting out.

The only thing i could find was to pretty much change to the FJ transfer case instead of an electronic case.

You most likely got better MPG in the summer because of summer blend gas, not because of the hubs. On the newer Tacoma it is basically a waste of money since they come with a disconnect system instead of systems that need locking hubs for MPG or saving wear. Any conversion would be expensive and most likely never pay for itself through MPG. You can read some about it here.

The best way to get better MPG is to slow down. Keep the rpm 2000 or under if MPG is what you are after.
