My 2021 Tacoma SR5 is now four years old. I have a battery checker that does all the diagnostics. I just checked it a few days ago and getting tested fine. I know this battery is staring to get up there in age. Just wondering if checking it monthly would be ok, OR can a battery just fail very quickly and get a new one now?

Go to Wal-Mart and buy a new 24F for the peace of mind. No need to worry or be left stranded. If you would rather wait, buy a jump pack.

I always replace proactively, rather than letting my battery dictate future events.

I toss the old one on a shelf and hook it to a tender. Almost inevitably I find a use for it.
More often than not, it's a friend or neighbor that didn't replace theirs soon enough..

They can be just 1 failed cell away from useless. Or they can "slow crank" for weeks to warn you. Autozone and OReilly can "load test" the battery ... not just static test but verify if under pressure it is failing.

Regardless, if you do not have a battery boost pack like NOCO GB40 you are always at risk of sudden unexpected failure.

Batteries can be fickle... More often that not, they do give warning signs when about to go (slower cranking), but not always.
I've had batteries last 13 years, I've also had batteries last one year. The OEM batt in my Tacoma lasted 4 years, and was one of the ones that went suddenly for me.

IMO, if you want to get the most out of your current battery while also playing safe, carry a jump pack (like the Noco mentioned in the post right above).

Thanks for the helpful information. I’ve got a Topdon (see link) so I guess I’ll need to carry it in this vehicle.

Toyota gave me a free new battery at 30 months into my warranty. My replacement battery is now over 6 years old and still fire right up. I do carry a jump box in my truck at all times. The small lithium ion packs seem to work well, but I have lead-acid because I am old school.

It depends on where you live. In the deep south I was replacing my batteries every 2 to 3 years.

I finally killed mine after 7 years and 1 month.
Was not driving like usually due to storm and used to charged cell phones

FYI, the lower temp limit for Noco packs is -20C (-4F). Probably the same for others. This may work for most people, but I am in the mountains skiing and snowshoeing during winter. Temps can easily fall below the threshold, especially at altitude. i also have jumper cables but they don’t work unless there’s another vehicle around.

I carried a battery pack around the last few years of it's life. I took the charger out to charge it one day, went to the store and my battery died. At least when I got home after needing a boost, my battery charger was fully charged!

Went out the next day and bought a battery! Anywho, I got 6 years out of mine.
