You can monitor the PIDs, the "PBA" pid, the Parking Brake Assist pid goes from 0 to 1 when the parking brake is engaged.

You can if need be pop it in 4lo, just dont go crazy. 2 lo mod would be the way to go. Thats pretty steep. That color is growing on me especially in those pics. Eyes up here

 

Automatic + 4.88 gears + 32” E-rated tires = you never think about it again.

It shouldn’t have to be this way, but honestly I have zero complaints after these changes, regarding the automatic 6-speed. Shifts like any other auto I ever drove. Better in fact.

 

I was going to say just hold the hand brake till you're ready to let the clutch out. No need to rev, drop the clutch and peel out.

 

Tried it … at the end of the day the clutch and engine need to overcome gravity pulling the truck backwards while all I see is blue sky and road. And it ain’t happening in this bish

 

Maybe you need some better tires?

 

I need lower gears … or more power at low rpm’s. It’s a one off thing. I lived here for 3 years hasn’t happened once before … just can’t stop on this road until I crest

 

Please explain this shifting while water crossing. I’ve never heard of it, and I can’t find a solid reason why.

I’ve shifted plenty of times in water where my 43’s are almost fully submerged. I’m not seeing where the issue lies. Not doubting you, just my Google search isn’t pulling up a lot.

 

It's old school but there's a small chance that the water could flood the clutch and pressure plate leading to no friction and a possible bog down.

I was taught never to shift while submerged, pick a gear and go.

I havent had it happen either but it came from my offroad junkie journeyman way back when and it does make sense.

Mine will smoothly go into 1st at 15mph, do it all the time pulling into parking lots. It's less than 3,000 RPM in 1st. Have done it at 20mph offroad on steep climbs (4HI).

Totally agree that automatics are easier in this environment. I tend to reach for low range way before I would in an automatic. But do love the behavior of the stick in low range off road (I don't do crazy crawling though).

 

The 2 low mod is nice. Well worth it.
I had a similar moment in the mountains west of Death Valley.
That’s where I learned how much traction 4low lays down.
I’ve used the 2low a few times and can only say it’s worth it.

A tune is great in addition.

 

OP - What's the name of the road / location?

Don't let the handbrake click... modulate it with your thumb on the release. Once you get the timing, you'll be good. It is a momentary thing - subtle. No need to have your clutch fight the brake.

I love the hand-brake hand brake on the taco! (Get it!?)

I am surrounded by steep country and I aim to get just enough revs to let the clutch grab fully and then go-to higher revs once fully engaged.
There's no need for excessive slip, or dumping of the clutch - or too much drama!

I manage quite steep hills getting to comms towers around my area. - no burning clutch, no smoke, no squealing tires, no rock flying everywhere, no drama.

Due to my need to address hills, I got the 2 low mod and I now use it often.

It is necessary due to tight switchbacks and high traction (rocky) on tracks around here.

Automatics struggle and are also all drama in such conditions as a result, the get too much speed and this causes excessive bouncing as tire spinning (when in the rough).

If you live on that road which is causing you grief, you need to get it. It is the correct tool for the job. It simply makes your taco much better suited for the (hill-climb) task.

We all get the appropriate tires to suit our use... 2 low mod does the same for your transmission. It makes it able to manage a larger range of terrain that most people will need...

It gives you more torque at lower RPM due to the lower gear ratios, of course... And it has the added benefit of reducing the gap between gears to accommodate the speed you need / want in each case.

The Taco is a popular truck. Most owners use it as a Camry, really... (it is true - and a Camry would likely work for theem!).

It is old school, but not as old-school as a truch could be... 2lo mod let's you keep the front hubs unlocked - even if Toyota has taken away the hubs themselves!
