So my bro's truck failed smog check the other day. The tech told him that both of his cats were fried. Any suggestions on what to check first that would cause this? Excessive fuel dump maybe? Bad injectors?

Bobbed Left front ~ Ok not really but I bought it crashed from the kids dad 4-CHEAP. Frame Swap and 04 Clip + 6" lift ~ Woo Hoo!!!
Sounds like a fuel rich condition ~ What kind of drivability isues?
Check engine should be lit up. If not verify it works. Does the computer go into closed loop. You are gonna need an OBDII scanner.

It is a 2002 off road access cab. I think it has around 120,000 miles on it. The check engine light is on. There are no driveability issues. It still runs like a champ. We just swapped out the rear cat, but doesn't make a difference until we figure out why the originals went bad.

i can tell ya this.....if its still running strong.....you aint got bad cats. when a cat goes bad...they'll clog up and the truck will feel like its dying when you try to get up to speed. get the codes read somewhere like autozone. im betting on it being an 02 sensor......and they failed inspection cause of the cel.

Gray wire, Some lights in the bed area, and some character marks throughout.
I would agree. If the CATS are fried at 120,000.......it is because they are expensive and the mechanic is seeing $$$$$$$.

If it is running fine, and throwing a CEL, then O2 sensor is my bet too.
