Friendly reminder, if you forget to put the oil fill cap back on, it will throw a P0174 eventually.

Pretty self explanatory. If you forget to put the oil cap on, it will throw a P0174 or a P0171 code (lean, bank 2 and lean bank 1) eventually. Surprisingly, it took more than a week.

The most common cause for these codes is a vacuum leak. There were no drivability issues. I was getting loaded up for bear, building a smoke machine to spot tricky vacuum leaks, and it turned out to be a 60 second diagnosis and "repair" once I actually opened the hood.

Sometimes, it really is just the little easy thing.

Thanks. Do you recommend a code reader?

I bought the "pretty good" version at harbor freight. Zurich zr13. I have used it half a dozen times in less than two years. Friends, family, etc. It has done everything I needed. It was about 139'ish bucks if I recall. I see that same one is now $170 since the inflation monster has been so busy. I think some parts stores will plug one in and read your codes for you.

O'Reilly here in town will happily let you use theirs. Just thought it might be nice to have one in the glove box. $170 isn't cheap but still, peace of mind....

I got an oil change 1000 miles ago. Then after getting some cheap gas, I get error code P0171. Decided to check oil and cap was off all that time!! Luckily, I think due to sideways engine placement and full synthetic, I was only short a quart. So put that in, but still have the code after another 300 miles. Does it need to be reset somehow, or could it be another problem?

Clear the code with a scanner and see if it comes back. If it does, then you have another issue.
