Mine is an early 06 and it never had one. I thought about making one and throwing it in there though. There is a slot for it.. :dunno:

You should be able to just use the factory one. I never had a need for it. I never had an issue with a dusty interior, or anything.

i think its more boxed than the 2nd / 3rd gens.... but you are right i was thinking of the 4 runners that do get a fully boxed frame.

OP...your filter looks squeaky clean compared to mine. I could replace my cabin filter almost every month. Granted my truck lives outside under trees, bushes and various other plant growth. These plants shit a lot of leaves, twigs, blossoms and stems onto my Taco. Much of it evidently gets sucked into the cabin air stream. The last cleaning I did, I had to pick 3 inches of leaf crap off the top of the filter before I could get the filter to slide out. I'm considering some sort of pre-filter over the air intake. Am I correct in assuming that the cabin air intake is that grid in the center of the rear hood lip (I should get a picture)? Hard to believe that that much junk can get in there.

As long as we are reminding ourselves of things that need routine cleaning, don't forget those 2 spots in the bottom of each door hinge area hidden behind that little rubber flap. An amazing amount of crap can build up in there as stuff drains down from above. Get in there with a crevice tool on your shop vac and suck it out. You'll be surprised at all the watery sludge that comes out of there. Then spray in there with a little Fluid Film to keep the rust a bay.

I would be willing to bet it was added after it was initially bought.

Owners manual mentions zero about cabin air filter so you're right.

As far as I know, the frame for the filter came on all '05's. Just no actual filter.

This filter came out of my '05. It's a Toyota factory one as well, looked old as shit on the sides.. my '05 4Runner sport also has one. Either or, it's there now and I'll keep it after looking at all the sh*t it blocked from my interior.

Same with my 2006. Maybe because it was with the first group of 06's that hit the lot. It has the space for it, just no filter.

Just changed mine after finding 6 baby mice lying on the passenger side floor mat. Big nest on top of the filter, but no sign of mama. I've now added wire mesh over the opening under the windshield cowl.

Real men just call it camping
When my original filter got dirty, I made the "filter" out of a piece of screen just to keep the big crap out. After reading this thread, I decided to check it. Here is how it looks after three years.
