Has anybody went from OV to a Magnuson supercharger?

I'm running the premium SFOB and have been so impressed with it I'm afraid I'd be disappointed after spending the big bucks on the SC. I love the way my truck runs, but of course more is always better.

Looking for some first hand experience/opinions.

Can’t say any experience with this supercharger. But you are going to a supercharger..how is not going to make you smile . …lol it’s more power . You can’t go downhill . The tune will need to be set up for the super charger .

I've read the SC is not a monster change in HP and I'm just afraid it's not $6,500 worth of an improvement. The OV Tune feels just THAT good.

And you would need to give up the OV Tune and flash to the locked tune provided by Magnuson. This would be a bigger issue if I had an automatic because you loose the shifting improvements provided by OV. This is a mute point with my manual.

"Exceptional vehicle performance with over 370 hp and 330 ft-lbs of torque at the crank (~308 hp and 275 ft-lbs at the rear wheels)" ~Magnuson

As always, there is no replacement for displacement. If you want a fast vehicle don't buy a truck, if you want a fast truck don't buy a Taco. 370hp will be peppy, but it will never be fast on a 5,000lb vehicle. Not worth $5-$10,000 but that's just my 2 cents.

A lot of it is gonna depend what rpms you drive at. If you are typically under 3k rpm, you probably won’t notice anything and potentially even be disappointed in loss of low end power.

Yeah they're going to have to get a proper tune before I jump in.

There's people on the Magnuson Supercharger megathread complaining about it and some even missing their KDMax tune because of how poor the current SC tune is, just FYI. I'm waiting to consider until they get that tune fixed.

A supercharger on these applications will always leave you wanting more. That being said the TVS1900 is way oversized for the 2gr. Along with that MASSIVE intercooler id guess that there is tons of room to grow.

It all depends on how much boost the 2GR-FKS will take and what you’re going to have to do to support more power.

When I was keeping up with OVTurbo stuff It seemed like a lot of little things needed attention and it got kind of complicated with the two sets of injectors and fuel pump etc.

I suspect that people will start pushing it in time. So we’ll see where it goes. From what I gather MESO blew his motor with the OVTurbo kit. I really want to know all the details but it seems like anything OVTune is a naughty subject.

Also, Harrop is still working on a kit. With their work on the 2GR in the lotus we might see better numbers. They know that engine pretty well.

Another way to make it feel faster is new gears. That’s on my list of to do.

    Exactly.
I updated my ECM to 04B42 thinking that a tune pack would be out in a reasonable time frame (dumb, I know). I sorely miss the SFOB low end every day. Playing around with the stock file in Vf has taught me quite a bit.. including - if the file isn't based on SFOB (for M/T), it isn't worth shit.

It is known that it was as very custom build of the kit and that he took it for extended boost runs before getting the tune setup. So, it detonated hard and fragged.

Yup, this is what I'm concerned about. The OV Tune has given me more low end torque and I'd hate to give that up.
My truck is MUCH MORE fun to drive now that I stepped up to the premium tune.

I don’t know the first thing about OVtune but I’m sure you could add “tip in” sort of like a pedal commander.

Then take the brass restrictor out. That definitely makes boost hit harder.

I had considered an S/C, but it was noted that regardless of tune, I was likely to loose MPGs. I like getting 400mi or so of range, so I am sticking with N/A.

Check out the Magnuson Supercharger Mega Thread for 16 + Tacoma = unboxing......

Many of us came from OV to Magnuson. Seems like the MT users are more happy than the AT users. The shifting logic from Magnuson needs some work for us AT owners. As for power - OV tune does not come close. I tow and the SC is hands down way better than just OVTune. I towed before the SC too - better than stock but still weak. Not the case with the SC. Mileage will take a hit if you like the skinny pedal. Plenty of power for towing and passing while towing. As said the only issue with the Magnuson SC is the Tune they provide (which is locked). OVTune is a vendor to them and has nothing to do with their Tune - and has said he has no intention of making a tune for them. The Magnuson SC and Tune are CARB approved - no one else has this yet. OVTune said he has no intention of getting CARB approved for his twins (or the limited release of SC he once sold). The Magnuson SC is not difficult to install and fits like a glove. Likely less money than jumping ship and going to a V8 Tundra. If you want V8 power from your V6 it is IMO the best option.

Yep. These trucks need all the low end they can get. More power over 3k RPM doesnt do me any good. I havent seen enough positive feedback yet for the $6500+

    Yes, with forum/my own mods.
I'll get back on SFOB when a file becomes available for 04B42, or I hear of someone successfully downgrading their ECU.. I'm not going to be the guinea pig for that lol.
