I had an 05 with 65k on it when I traded it. It ran perfect. I didn't notice any whine when downshifting, nothing out of the ordinary anyway. About a billion years ago I had an 86 truck. It didn't have nearly the power of the modern 4 cylinder. It was a great truck. However old Toyota trucks don't last forever. Eventually they rust away into the sunset.

Although I don't say that any specific generation or year model is better than another ( I like all the new gadgets on the new trucks), I do have to agree with OP that there is something about the old trucks - maybe the simplicity in some weird way, because we all like the fancy stuff, but my first Toyota was a 1989 Hilux diesel and I would pay big bucks to get one in good shape today - no AC, no electric windows, vinyl seats and floor etc., but a real truck. Maybe it's just my age and nostalgia...

I don't downshift into first in the city my truck anyway, so I wouldn't know if a whine is normal. I could see it though.... These trucks have a really low 1st gear... you'd have to be crawling to want to downshift anyway. I would say it's your tranny screaming for mercy.

He actually replied numerous times lol.

So, just to clarify, they haven't been out long enough for anyone to say they will last, but they've been out long enough for you to say they WON'T last?

My 09 is obviously young, but FWIW, I've had to replace nothing on it. Only issue it had was the goofy shifting with the auto tranny that only seemed to effect the 09's and was a simple computer reflash under warranty, that's it. Again, not long enough to say much, but you make it sound like these are riddled with flat out defects and failing components. Any vehicle has quirks. Quirks and actual failing problems are 2 different things. Find me the perfect truck, I'll buy it. I love the old trucks and wouldn't mind one as a project, but as i said originally said, my V6 access cab serves me well, something a 112hp regular cab would serve no purpose for me personally.

I just don't really get the point of the thread. You imply the only thing wrong with the old trucks was that they rusted away, but ran forever. The 2nd gens don't rust away, and there's no logical argument or evidence to prove they won't last. Seems like you're losing the same logic to support one argument and disprove another.

Everyone knows that if you are not going fast enough to accelerate in second you get engine denotation, do you stay in second in a parking lots? Do you stop completely before shifting into first?

If that sound is normal for that truck then fine its normal for that truck, but then it’s the squeaking clutch pedal, I could not keep it, they tried to tell me it is normal too and also that It was just the way I drove it. I guess I just thought I knew how to drive a stick all these years.

I might consider an auto, but that just cost more initially and more for brakes over its life.

I can or could mostly avoid the whining when driving, but once and a while it showed up and it was not helping the negative feeling about that clutch pedal that creaked every time.

Saying you never shift from second to first while rolling is rubbish, its 2012 and nobody stops completely to shift into first, it’s a synchromesh, you would never shift in reverse unless fully stopped, but fully stopping to shift it into first is ridiculous and so is having to wait to avoid any crazy whining sound is not something I am willing to spend that kind of money on. Maybe it is new and better technology but it is not a silent type.

I thought about test riding some more to see if the one I got was unusual, but the squeaking clutch pedal looms, I already have that and am not spending more for one that does it too.

It sucks but they pretty much lost me.

Keep in mind there are 2wd base trucks and then higher models, the base has no gadgets That is what I liked about it, simple reliable and relatively low cost. I never said they should stop selling the 30K models. I just lost faith in the 17K base truck.

I am not crying I only have 50K miles on my 2004, the only issue it has is the squeaky clutch pedal and that its frame is rusting fast, but Toyota settled on that and offered a 15 year frame perforation warranty as a settlement to avoid a class action lawsuit. So the frame integrity is guaranteed till 2019, again who is crying not me.

Mine is and has been paid off, has been since 2007. I do not like spending all my money on a vehicle to me it is just transportation. I would rather spend my money on other things like motorcycles and boats and or vacations.

I want a cheap base truck with an FJ front end, I do not want them to stop making anything they already make, just give me a base truck with a front that looks like the FJ. I want it small but sit high, simple and minimal and low cost.

Oh yeah and no fucked up noises.
