I took the hub assembly to a machine shop and had a new bearing pressed in.

Now the drive axle is too short to reach into the locking hub.

    What am I doing wrong?

What keeps the boot assembly pressed up against the hub assembly?

Thread a bolt into the threaded hole on the end of the axle shaft (don't make it tight, just something to hold onto) and use it to pull the shaft out far enough to get the snapring on.

One quick question... do you have manual hubs?

He does. That's why he's asking and the other link he posted shows his axle with Aisin manual hubs.

It doesn't look like the axle is seated all the way in. Looking at pics 3 & 4, it seems like it should seat a lot closer to the spindle

When the axle is pushed all the way against the inside of the hub assembly, the splines are probably an inch too short.

Looks like you have the wrong manual hubs (86-95). There is a specific Tacoma manual hub (95.5-00) that is not as deep as the earlier style.

    Something doesn't add up.....

Did you just buy those manual hubs ? (they look clean).

Post pics of the other side if you haven't taken it apart yet.

You may have the wrong kit.

That's what I was thinking. My manual hubs look shallower that what I'm seeing in the pic. Like you said, since the hub looks so clean inside, I'm wondering if these are new hubs that are being installed.

Also... I can't remember... Can you get more engagement by locking/unlocking the hub? (I haven't had mine apart in years now)

X2, also looks like the 4Runner (tapered) axle shafts. However they should still fit the Taco hubs.

I am away from home right now working but will be back on wednesday so no pics right now.

I took the drivers side apart and the hubs looks the same. The only difference was the axle length.

It is possible the previous owner put the wrong axle in? It was short when I took the locking huvs off in july.

100x more likely the previous owner bought the wrong locking hubs. I'd say the cv axles are the correct length.
