is this what you'd expect from a 10 year old truck with original brakes at 117K miles?

good effing lord, remind me NEVER to buy a truck in a salty area. That looks HORRIBLE.

    1. brake caliper leaking fluid
    2. brake pad contact is MINIMAL, it should extend the full surface (or just about) of the rotor

@TnShooter - Frame replaced this year... 4 months for them to do (sea of tacomas, frames stacked high, one technician, 3.5 days per truck). Looks nice! No body rust, so looking to keep the truck.

@nd4spdbh - PB Blaster, not brake fluid for caliper replacement. They are stock calipers, so not sure about the contact area. Could be why I want better brakes?

are those the new calipers in the picture?

Also looks like your pads arent even touching the outer 1/4+in of rotor... thats ALOT of surface area not to be using.

Brakes are shot, caliper is possibly frozen and brake fluid is leaking. For original brakes on a 10 year old truck with that mileage in a salt prone area though, you did pretty well. Time for a brake job though!

Yup....replace rotors and calipers. Those pads aren't biting properly.
    Background stuff looks decent.

Every time I see pics of trucks from up north I’m reminded why I live where it doesn’t snow.

It isn't the snow that does it,it is all the corrosive shit they spread on the roads. And some areas are simply brutal with the shit.

Yeah, that’s what I was talking about, they’re spreading stuff that eats your truck away.

I'm in TN and my rotors looked almost as bad. I pulled them, sanded the rust off with a flap wheel and angle grinder, soaked the rotors in evaporust for a few days, and changed the pads. The rust is taking over the rotor and eating up the pads. And no, I did not sand deep into the rotors and warp them; I just removed the perimeter rust with a 4.5" flap wheel and finished them with a 2" sanding disc on a rt angle die grinder.

No - its not brake fluid, but PB Blaster so I can pull the caliper bolts. Yes, the caliper piston has been "sticky" for a while. Toyota service technician says it is common for the left side to have this issue. Must be a manufacturing issue.

Plus, the salt water and air is not kind. Major rust happened when I was parking the truck by Plymouth bay over a two year period. Luckily, Toyota replaced the frame and the body panels survived.

North of you a bit, I'm on my third set of calipers and rotors on my '05. The current set will look like your pics i a few years, one piston may already be sticking a bit. 10 years is huge!

Does anyone know if Cryogenic treated rotors are rust resistant?
Does anyone know if electrostatic coated calipers are rust resistant?

I will be doing mine shortly.
