I had an annoying rattle for about a month and finally found the source this morning.

Both front brake rotor splash shields had rusted to the point that they were just hanging behind the front hubs. The entire center section had rusted away.

OK - found the problem ! Yeah !

I pulled the wheels off, cut the remainder of the shields off with a pair of tin snips and removed what was left of them.

    Here's my question:
    1. Do I need to replace them ? It doesn't seem like they are important.
    2. If I do need to replace them, Where do I get replacements?

The part number on the right hand shield is 47781-04020 and I can't find that part on-line.

    'Need to'? Probably not.

Does it help with keeping things a bit cleaner, maybe even a touch drier in everyday pavement use? Maybe. It could even help with cooling if there is some kind of air guided into the area. Dunno, never looked.

But I'd put a WTB ad in the 1st gen B/S/T forum and see if you could stir up some part out bits. Or look in your local pick and pulls. They are not a high demand item I'd wager.

More importantly, if those are rusted out, I'd be very concerned about a thorough frame inspection. Beating, probing, borescope in hidden places.

Don’t need. But I would also look to replace them when you get a chance.

Call local salvage yards, good time to learn who has what. Great source of parts.

Also, like what was already said, go to the b/s/t thread. There is always a truck being parted out.

Toyota replaced the frame 18 months ago, so no issues with frame rust, just everything else

    Rockauto doesn't list that part.

If I go to the trouble of replacing them, I want new ones not old ones that are just as rusted. You have to pull the hubs to get the new ones on OR cut the new ones and put them on in two pieces. I'd rather not do all of that work only to have the next set rot off in a year.

The crap part if I recall they can't be changed unless you pull the wheel bearing, which destroys the bearing. I changed both mine for new because they were rotten

You can pull the hubs off (sealed bearings) without destroying the bearings. The hub comes off as a unit. I've had to pull the hubs off to replace axle shafts when a CV boot was torn. The hub will go back on with no damage. However, it's a lot of work for a stupid little piece of sheet metal.

If I pull those hubs, I'm going to put NEW splash shield in place and I might even paint them with some high quality paint first in the hopes that the new set will live longer.

Does anyone know a source for NEW splash shields other than the dealership?

Don’t bother pulling the wheel hub off. Cut the new dust shield into two pieces and bolt them back together.

I've been looking for a set for a 2nd Gen, as well. They're tough to find at the usual spots, like Rock Auto. Best of luck!

    thread revival!

    at least only 12 months.

does anyone know if the Tundra shield would fit? Has anyone tried?

I'm planning the TBU and rather than replace and cut I could just replace with Tundra ones to save time.

You’d need to have the wheel hub out to do any sort of brake shield work.
