    Hey guys,
So I’m planning to do some more camping and exploring this year and want to invest in a winch.

being a welder, I can build my own bumper. Coastal Off-road makes a nice bumper for our 3rd gens, and after building one of their 2nd gen bumpers and seeing the quality of their cuts and bends, I’d like to give it a go.

it would be a full high clearance plate bumper weighing in at about 110lbs without a winch, for less than the cost of a slimline bumper. My question is if my stock suspension is going to sag too much or not once it’s on. Is ~200lbs going to be an issue?

Or would it be better to just settle for a slimline bumper for weight savings? Do the slimline bumpers still offer decent protection?

I may lift in the future, and if it’s only going to sag an inch or so I may just use spacers to pop the front end back up for the time being. I’d like to add sliders and skid plates one day, so that extra weight would have to be factored in but I don’t know how far out that would be.

Could my stock suspension handle 200lbs or should I aim for the slimline?

Stock springs will cause it to sag about 3/4” or more. When I had a slimline my front dropped about that with a winch. Together it was about 150 lbs

So if I went with a slimline, winch and leveling spacer, that should keep me fairly close to stock height for the time being?

I think so yes. You’ll still notice some nose dive under breaking and the suspension may bottom when off-roading but should suffice until you get heavier coils.

I believe SSO also had a DIY kit available for their slimline bumper.

Yes. However they seem to be load bearing as well. I have em on but i dont have any additional weight in the front. They really smooth out the front and they say it can support weight too.

They look nice but those are just a band-aid to the issue. A properly set up suspension will never demand you to ride on the bump stops during normal driving or in turns. If you're installing these to remedy excessive leaning or sag, then you have a spring/ shock issue or maybe even both.

Well it's hard to not ride on these as they are almost always engaged even unloaded. Here's a pic from my setup.

+200 lbs on 2 700 lb/in coil springs with about a 2-1 mechanical advantage due to the suspension geometry should result in 400/700 = .57” of less ride height or there abouts. Dynamic effects, which might be more important, are harder to estimate without specs on the shocks

You can always tune/upgrade the suspension to your tastes after adding the weight.

Don’t get sucked into putting stiffer coil springs on your truck (not sure there are any stiffer than stock anyway). You can use coil overs with adjustable preload and shock valving to dial it in.

Always keep in mind that 75% of the shit on here is misinformation.
