Hi all just wondering if any of you had to replace the front calipers on your truck and at what mileage.
Just had my truck maintenance done and was told front right caliper needs to be replace at 75,000 KM ( 46,000 miles ) is this normal. I have owned previous Tacoma and don't recall ever changing calipers. Just wondering is this normal or a defect. Thanks for any reasonable answer.

your missing an important part of this equation in your post....
why are they telling you the caliper needs replacing????

also did you take it to them to checkout a specific concern / symptom?
or was it just a recc off an inspection?

It is part of vehicle maintenance brake inspection. I have been taking my vehicle at this place since new and they are honest family owned business. So if they say I need a caliper then I do.

    ok!
But why are they claiming you need a caliper?
What are they saying is wrong with it?

Im not saying you dont, just trying to better understand what's wrong with this said caliper...

I want to know if it is covered under the 30,000 km ( 3 year ) manufacturers warranty. Some components are covered beyond and would like to know what. I will find out today what the issue is with the caliper from my mechanic.

My guess would be that it most likely is covered under 3/36 if it was leaking or binding....
But if he wants to replace it cuz its rusting, assuming it snows in Canada, would not be covered......

If he was truly an honest mechanic he should know the general ins & outs of bumper to bumper warranties...
"Hey I found this wrong with your car, chances are you still fall under manf warranty, give them a call, if its not, ill give you an estimate" so on...

If your truck is a 21 as it states in your sig, youre out of 3 years, warranty coverage ends at which ever comes first,

I wouldn’t say caliper issues are super common, but they do happen and most of the time the problematic piston is the inner lower piston. I wish Toyota just used normal floating calipers.

I see you're in Ontario too, might be rusted out piston causing uneven wear. Maybe they tried to bleed the brakes and the bleeder was stuck?

Maybe uneven pad wear, maybe a stuck bleeder screw. Did they say why?

In my opinion calipers should be replaced in pairs though, doing a single side opens up the possibly of uneven braking side to side. Not a huge concern but something to think about

46k is pretty early to need calipers unless you live in the rust belt

Thanks everyone for your replies. I talked to the mechanic and he said the caliper pistons ( 2 ) where ceased on both front calipers. Make the story short I have replaced both calipers, pads and rotors. Now it is like new again.
Did not bother trying to find out if they were under warranty which some of you have mentioned 3 years or 36,000 and I am passed that.

Most manufacturers exclude brakes from warranty because they're a wear item and more dependent on driver habit. At least for the brake components down at the wheels

Brake pads are wear item, but in some situations can get covered under 12/12,
also in certain situation you can get pads covered if you code it to another component, cause & effect...

if calipers are defective, they would be covered under Toyotas base bumper to bumper warranty...
Canada, snow state, road salt, seized pistons, assuming rusty, wouldnt hold my breath....

I couldn't tell you what techs do in snowy states where rust is an issue, ide guess they dont turn a blind eye & push it through as likelihood of toyota calling the part back & inspecting it is high, safety item.....

In salty environments like ours, you need to "service" the brakes every two years or so. Basically clean up and grease the pad backing plate, shims, and retention pins.

I have a very rust free and very well maintained 2016, and needed to replace my driver's side calliper last week at 81,000 miles (130,000 km) because one of the pistons became stuck and would not retract when letting off the brake pedal. I did not replace the passenger-side calliper since it is rust free and clean/greased and operates normally.

Replaced with a brand new oem Toyota calliper. Forgot how shiny they are when brand new.

I've actually never had a calliper seize on any vehicle ever before this. Not sure what caused it, but it does happen.
