Switching out the camera would only allow you to get video signal at a better resolution. You would probably need to upgrade the screen to display it properly.

Looks like the rear birds eye camera uses a 180degree camera and the ones without uses a 160-170degree camera. That is why the outer edges are warped and blurry, but you can see the entire rear bumper and side unlike my camera.

That makes sense, I just wish it performed better. Things are often blurry and low light conditions are very poor. Especially for 2020.

They should have used better cameras but i guess they need something for the 2022 model year. :D

We're complaining, but we're also still buying... so you may have a good future in automotive sales?

Sadly, the salesman convinced me that it was a fixable software issue. I didnt realize it was just the way it was designed until after I bought it.

Same issue... this is something that should be addressed because it's pretty bad esp compared to the earlier cameras. Luckily the rear sonars are still pretty good.

Is this the same system that supposedly lets you check out the approach?

Yes..... Sadly I agree with the post. The quality on all cameras is very poor. My 2016 has a much better camera.

Bought my wife a 2019 Lexus RX350, cameras are amazing and the stitching of the 4 camera images create a believable top-down image but my brand new 2020 Taco Pro cameras are a disappointment. Is it reasonable a company would buy better cameras for the Lexus line and skimp on the Toyotas? That's a weird place to look for savings. I'll get used to the images but it's bummer when backing to hitch a trailer.

I agree the video quality is really lacking. But if Toyota would have included HD cameras/display in 2020 then they wouldn't have anything to justify a price increase next year.

The mask is not there when using the cams off road in 4x4.
The forward cam works great for seeing in front of the truck up to 7mph then it auto switches off.
I really want to manually control this feature (and lose the mask on road too)

I think Toyota is on the money with this masking. I have to say, if I had the feature, I’d be tempted on occasion to lay back and have a little relaxation while driving via the display.

Just think of all the people with sore backs, getting BJs, etc that would by driving their trucks while lying down. It would be pandemonium on the street.

Anyone figure out a workaround to get rid of this triangle? It's super stupid to the point of irritating

There has to be a wire of some sort that triggers with the speed of the truck like the ones in our older HU for the Nav programming. Just no one has explored to find it yet.

Toyota is notorious for using "planned obsolesce" (like the rest of the auto industry) i.e. don't add this feature until next year so we can sell more new cars when they trade up for the features we left out. Example, my fully loaded '19 tacoma offroad did not have touch lock/unlock on the passenger side or a power seat option but my '21 does, a good example of planned obsolesce. Another frustration, my '19 had a BRIGHT radio head display and the sun did not distort it. My '21 has the dimmest display similar to my '13 Rav4. The sun washes it out WITH the brightness up All The Way. (also, makes we wonder if Toyota couldn't get updated cameras for the '21 models due to Covid so they grabbed the old crappy radio heads from the back of a warehouse and installed them in the '21's) The triangle in the front camera display is outrageous and makes me wonder if it's one those 100% Toyota brainworked ideas so they can get government money to market as a "safety feature". Similar to the remote start thing where the vehicle shoots off when you open the door forcing you to restart the engine, another Toyota frustration marketed to us as "a safety feature so no one can steal your vehicle after you remote start it". Excuse me, the other guys link the smart key and brake pedal to it so you don't have to restart. So, does Toyota mask part of the front camera so you won't drive by the display ? who knows but, seriously, anybody who would drive by display deserves to trash their truck up a tree, with no harm to themselves of course (and don't hate on me for that remark .. you know you're thinking the same thing..ha)

My 2018 has manual seats. Tacomas didn’t get a power drivers seat until 2019.

IIRC, 4Runner Pros didn’t even get a sunroof until 2018, too.

But this argument seems ironic because Toyota owners typically hang on to their vehicles longest out of any manufacturer. I think the average owner life span of a Taco is 6-8 years.

But power seats and sunroofs…not exactly ground-breaking technology. I mean, when did the old-school parking pull brake eventually make its way out of trucks? LoL. When corollas have more “modern” conveniences than your $40k+ truck…

Cue all the old people who want their 2021 trucks to work and drive like a 52 Chevy truck…

see, this is a common comment around here but I disagree. The screen is no WORSE then older screens yet the video itself is worse. More telling is that album artwork when using CarPlay looks fine, if the screen was bad that artwork would look bad too.

frankly I think it is just very poor sensors in the cameras. I’m trying some higher quality sensors myself to see if it helps, now I just need to figure out what it is using canbus on the cameras for.

So did anyone figure this out? In my ‘22 taco limited, i have the 8 inch screen which i think has decent resolution but limited by the cameras installed. Looks like they didnt do any camera upgrade even since 2019. But i do find that black triangle very annoying and i dont mind the speed limit for the video showing but i dont want the damn triange

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
From the looks of the previous dialogue, you're stuck with it. It's engineered into the system.
