So I been running the Bilsteins 5100 with my stock coil and I was just wondering if I should change it to a better aftermarket coil to get a better ride out of it on and off road. Any ideas . Thanks

How much add on weight up front?

Recommending a coil is going to depend on more than just wanting a "better ride".

Tons of people run OME coils, depends how much height you want / if you have any extra weight up front (heavy bumper, winch, etc.). I run a OME 884 coil and love it.

Assuming your lift is from preloading the OE springs, the answer is yes.

Get the right coils for the lift and use the 0 notch.

No extra weight . Stock front bumper just lighting everywhere. I'm set all the way up to get 2.5" lift and don't want to lower it. Icon UCA's. And sway bar relocated. That is all up front.

I believe you'd want an OME 887 for approx. 2.5" unloaded. I also believe the eibach coils provide about the same.

So get a OEM 887 coil and set it to 0 on the adjustment on the strut, and that will give me 2.5" lift and a big difference in ride . Correct?

Any coil should be set at 0 when it comes to OME or Eibach. I'll have to double check the chart. I believe the height chart is in the link mentioned above.

I just looked at chart 3rd gen taco double cab 4x4 Bilsteins 0 notch 887 2.25" lift and the 888 2.75" lift . So now where is the best place to buy the 888 coil?

So if I'm reading correctly on the OME/ARB website, the 888 is a coil designed for load (bumper, etc.) And the 887 is for stock weight, so you'll likely want an 887. @HeadStrong Off-Road is a popular vendor here, but demand is high for suspension keep that in mind

Best bang for the buck are Bilstein 6112's - 2.5" shock body for a fraction of the price of Kings and so forth. They do preload the coil but the 6112's and the coils they come with are designed to handle the pre load. I'm on 2" of lift with 6112's and the ride is sublime.

I’m skeptical that one brand of coil spring is significantly better than another; especially with respect to ride qualify. They are very simple devices and in general apples to apples do not affect ride quality. Spring rate can affect ride quality and generally speaking a lower rate will net you a better ride. Shocks are probably your biggest bang for the buck.

So tell me this, is the Bilsteins 5100 taller than the stock yellow Bilstein that came on the truck? And what difference is there between them beside the adjustment? Everything I look for in coils only will give me 2" lift if set at 0 . If this is something I have to add a spacer to get the other 1/2 " it's not worth my time doing this. I'll stepup to icon front coil packs

I don’t have first hand experience with the bilstein 5100, but from what i have read it is considered an upgrade over the stock OR shock. People have claimed the stock OR shock is comparable to bilstein 4600 and others have said that it is not comparable.

2” of lift is about the feasible max on a 3rd gen. From the factory my 3rd gen had about 3” of droop so anything near 3” is pushing the limits of the suspension. I think this is why most high quality kits advertise 2”. Apparently 2nd gens came with about 1” more droop and thus many lift kits are advertised as 3” or 2-3”. I think it is likely misleading.

You can get 1” more of droop (and total travel) back by going with extended length coilovers, but they are spendy.

One thing I should clarify is that coil spring rate as opposed to coil spring manufacturer can definitely affect ride quality. You want to get the correct spring/shock combination that meets your goals. I went with a softer 600 lb/in spring and a big shock (King RR).

Isn't the 5100 larger diameter piston and shaft, different valving?
