have to replace the ADD front diff on my '01. Found an ADD front diff from a '00 4runner and want to know if it will be a straight bolt in swap or will I have to mess around with brackets and housings? The seller is listing it as only fitting 95-00 tacomas but what I've found online is that it should bolt in.

    Same.

    Just the diff? 3rd member?

Make sure you match gear ratio as 4R's offered slightly different ratios.

You killed your current front diff?

Only difference I can remember is that the earlier variants were vacuum actuated vs electric actuated on later models.

All same but gear ratio may be different. Be sure to check that.

I thought they were the same, but all the used parts sellers differentiate between 99-00 diffs and 01-04 diffs. after looking at pics and what you 2 have said, it looks like I'll have to swap my actuator onto the new housing, but the bolt pattern for that seems the same. Can someone confirm that the internals are the same and the later electric actuator will interface with the earlier vacuum internals?

It's either an ADD diff or a manual hub diff, no vacuum actuators.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I am really confused Just what has failed?? The front third member (differential ) has failed in a real serious way making the axle housing no longer able to be used??

The actuator is no longer working for some unknown reason ?

Going from vacuum to electrical actuator you need to also install the rest of the electrical goodies.

You seem to be talking swapping the Complete Front axle from a 4Runner?

Just what are you doing maybe it is just using the wrong terms.

someone already answered this for you above.
Just make sure you have matching gearing

Maybe some diagrams will be helpful:

I believe that the differential housing is the same, as are the two forward mounts.

The Front Diff Carrier (passenger axle shaft (stub staff) + actuator) bolt to the diff clam shell.

    upload_2021-11-1_12-56-25.jpg

I don't know if the shaft or internal components are different from vac/add or not, but in theory you might be able to swap the entire Front Diff Carrier (stub shaft to the ne) clam.

In short.. If you match the gear ratio, and the actuator type, you're probably fine.

But it does beg the question- if you're able to swap the front diff internals out of your current front axle assembly... what happened to the clam shell and stub shaft, that they're no longer working?
