went to change needle bearing after lift installation and seen this fluid was green, I change the differential fluids at 30k miles, is this normal? I went ahead and changed the fluid at 10k since I was changing the needle bearing so it’s not even half way through the interval

I think it looks normal and in good condition. It will turn grey as it breaks down.

As long as you are on a level surface and the fluid is filled till it starts to run out of the fill hole, you will be fine.

By the book the front diff is 1.6 qts. As others said if youre parked on level ground, fill till it starts to run out the fill plug.

Thanks, and yes level ground in a shop floor, I stopped adding when I had a nice little dribble out of the filler hole. Last go around the dealership changed the fluids, so I was wondering if it was green from contamination or that’s the color of Toyota brand oil

I just poured it in until it started to trickle out of the over flow.
Then checked it a few days later, added a bit more.
By the time I spilled the fluid all over the place and got it filled. I had about 1/4 qt. left over.
My guess is I got 1.5 qts in there?

And for the record, technically the fluid should not pour/trickle out the fill plug.
There’s a spec for it, but I didn’t abide by it. IIRC, it supposed to “just” below the fill plug.
    I don’t remember the measurement.

Does it have a spit tube or something in case it’s over filled? Now I’m worried I over filled it :ohsnap:

Its like a yellowy light brown, so that may just be the way the light hits it.

If it gets water in it, it will be more like a light chocolate milk when mixed. Will get black as it breaks down and shiny if somethings is mega wrong. As long as its not these colors, I'd say you're good

I think it's just the sun hitting it. In the shade it would probably look more golden brown

Usually IF anything happens, it will puke the excess fluid out of the diff breather under the hood.
But I’m not going to talk about that, I still have not seen cold weather since I did mine.
And that’s when most guys have seen this happen.

Shhhhhh…. Let’s not talk about it:)

That fluid looks good, I know you've changed it but nothing to worry about there.

Sad day when you see this draining out of the diff. And yes if it looks like glitter lube, you got a big problem :D

I always get a smile on some of these fill levels.... How do you measure 0.20" BELOW the fill hole????

As an engineer, I have written procedures like this.....usually under protest about details like how to measure below a blind hole. During proof read, I'd edit out such statements, then the boss would counter the edit.
