Over the past weekend I ripped the boot on my front driveshaft. Wondering if anyone has had to replace one of these and how much of a pain it is. Also wondering where to get the cheapest one. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Just by looking at it, you may have to take the cv shaft off to replace. But the good news is they are only $30 from Toyota and it includes the grease.

The cv shaft couples the front differential directly to the wheel hub. There are no boots on the driveshaft, they are open u joints. By front driveshaft, I'm assuming you're talking about the one that connects the transfer case to the front diff.

Op, the boot on the splined slip joint as illustrated above is manufactured by Dana-Spicer. They are the OEM and the boot can be obtained through Northern Drivetrain as a kit. The kit includes the boot and the two Oetiker clamps. They are relatively inexpensive.

Its very doable. Toyota uses a moly grease in there but I think the Honda 60 moly grease stuff would work just as well and it can be found at Honda stealerships -- both the cars and motorcycles.

Don't forget to mark the driveshaft to make sure you put it together the exact same way it came apart. I don't know if it makes a difference with the front driveshaft but I know if you assemble the rear driveshaft out of phase it throws it out of balance and causes vibrations.

Getting around to do this today, went to toyota to get grease they wouldn't sell me grease without buying a boot, went to a few other places and they didn't know what I was talking about. I think I'm going to just use CV grease, does anybody not recommend this or recommend something different?

Mine had some blackish, moly-looking goo in there. What I did was clean all the old stuff out with sticks and cans of brake cleaner, then made a home brew based on a Ford TSB for drive line clunking at the slip yoke. I made a 50:50 mix of Honda 60 paste (60% moly) and the other half synthetic PTFE grease (SuperLube). The former is often available at motorcycle/ATV places and the Honda car dealer, and the later often at Ace Hardware and sometimes small tubes at Harbor Freight. Stay away from the auto store moly lubes IMHO as they are often contain only a few percent moly.

If you run out of something to do, here is something to read on lubing spline shafts. http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=490.0

Hey Guys, looking to get some more insight into this repair. Im about to order the boot from northern drivetrain llc but any luck with the grease? A link to where i can get it would be great! Also I just noticed this after hearing a rattle while letting the foot off the gas. I suspect the metal guard around the fuel tank caused this based on the pictures and inline with where the boot ripped. I do have time today to do a temporary fix, maybe clean it out with parts cleaner and duct tape? Think i can find some temporary grease to pack in there for the time being? Doesnt look like a hard fix but worried how long ive drove it like this and what sortof preventative maintenance i can do going forward.

Can you be a bit more specifc with the brand/actual links to the products used? Blackish goo doesnt do me much good. Im assuming 60% moly and SuperLube is what you bought. Could you link them for me please. Thanks in advance! And how bad of a job was this to do, could it be done on a weekday after work, meaning a couple hour job? I have a 3 inch lift and thinking i could get away without needing a jack for the job?

Appreciate the insight! Also how urgent would you say this repair needs to be done based on the above pictures?

I know this is an old thread but wondering how this repair turned out? I just ripped the same boot off my 2011 Tacoma yesterday and need to start looking at getting it replaced. Thanks in advance.
