Yesterday after duck hunting I did a little wheeling on the way out and while going up a pretty tough hill in 4 low my front end just popped and my front wheels stopped spinning. I know the front left wouldn't spin but couldn't see if the right was after.

On the way home from there, I could hear some metal on metal clinking when driving over washboard gravel roads coming from what I thought was the front end, but not entirely sure. Maybe another 10 minutes after that a clinking started coming from the rear end. It would go away and come back randomly but whatever it was it was rotating cause the faster/slower the trucks going, it clinks accordingly. Not sure if the two issues are related...

I have an appointment to get the truck looked at by a local shop tomorrow. I have my own ideas of what it could be, but am curious what you guys think?

    Any info is appreciated,

    Thanks

Probably broke a front CV Axle. When my buddy broke his it would make a god awful noise when it was put into 4wd and wouldn’t engage. Maybe the rear end noise you are hearing is just the front echoing out from underneath

Do you have manual hubs? Then probably snapped a CV in the hub. Or maybe elsewhere if ADD.

The speed dependent sound could be a rock behind the dust and rear brake drum.

CV is my first guess as well but it's weird cause when I bought the truck they had just been replaced by Gregs Japanese auto... Now that i'm typing this it actually makes a lot of sense that itd be the weak point lol.

I will say the noise in the back definitely isnt an echo. I had a friend hang his head out the window to verify that

Yes I have aftermarket manual hubs. Apparently, the hubs I have are a good brand. I'm new to the 4x4 community but everyone who notices says theyre good.

If that is the case should I replace both or just the one that is bad? is it considered undriveable at the moment?

Not sure how to tell for sure but they are OEM style, definitely look OEM

Check your receipt for the work, unless you paid ~300 per CV axle, they are most likely aftermarket, which are almost universally weaker than the OEM axles. Manual hub axles also have a smaller outer spline diameter, so they tend to snap more easily than the ADD axles.

You might be surprised how sounds tend to bounce around in the undercarriage of the truck. If you blew the front diff or CV, and now you're hearing a cyclic metallic noise, most likely it is from the front end.

That noise idea does sound very probable. I highly doubt Gregs Auto put in full spec OEM parts though.

While in 2wd what is the risk I am running driving around? If I can get it back to my parent's place across the state for Thanksgiving I could do the work in their garage rather then paying the bodonk mechanics in my little college town.

Is the CV spinning while in 2wd? dumb question I know but bear with me haha

First you should verify if it’s the cv

No, actually that is the beauty of manual hubs, the CVs are not turning when the hub is unlocked. You should be fine to drive it, although if that noise gets any worse there might be something else going on that might need more immediate attention.

Where are you located? We have a Greg's Japanese auto here in Seattle, although that might be a common name.

Yeah absolutely, I already have an appointment for tomorrow to diagnose. I just dont trust the bastards. Had them put on my header since the manifold was cracked and two of the three nuts connecting to the downpipe had fallen off by the time I got to Potholes (hunting spot) so I had no back pressure the whole weekend and they didnt use the gasket i left them which is probably why the nuts backed off... The guy also tried to tell me to replace my timing belt on my 2.7, said it was a common problem and he saw it all the time. The 2.7s chain driven ..

Sorry for the rant but that's why I wanna get it back to the Seattle area lol

Hell yeah man I grew up in Kent, just south of Seattle. I'm going to school at WSU over in Pullman but the work was done at the Covington Gregs.

I thought Greg's was all over the country?

Could be, I go to Seattle U and there is one right across the street that I walk past every day so that's what made me think of it lol

We'll be over in Colville for fall turkey and pheasant next week...

Nice, my buddy got a good pheasant last week out west of pullman. Not sure where Colville is though.

You plan on doing any wheelin over Thanksgiving break? I wanna find some new spots on the west side if my truck gets fixed.

Colville is up north of Spokane a ways, just a little town.

I'm always down to go wheeling, hit me up if you get your truck sorted out.

So after talking to the shop, it turns out the driver side CV popped out of the hub and one of the leaf springs on the passenger stack broke in half.

What would you guys do? I'm pretty tight on money this time of year as I don't work due to weather and am a full-time college student, but I want it to be sturdy after it's fixed. According to the shop, all the current leafs are oem and assumingly original. So, here is what I see as my options...

    Leaf Options:

Get all new HD leaf springs and fix the canopy sag VS. just replace passenger stack VS. just replace single broken one?

    CV Options:

pay like $200 to have a shop take it apart and determine if it's salvageable VS just by a new one VS SAS

What would you guys do? Any thoughts on driving it across state (500 miles) as is with the broken leaf taped down?

    Thanks!
