I've always heard that about the airbags alone being a reason for totaling, but that may be totally incorrect.

When I had my truck in the body shop for this fender bender that wasn't my fault, I asked the owner of the body shop about this, using the typical "deer strike" as the hypothetical scenario. He said that a new driver's airbag for my truck would be about $600. Keep in mind that this was at least 7 years ago, and the price of an OEM airbag has likely gone up. Also, my truck was not that old and had fiarly low miles. Removing and replacing an airbag is not all that hard. Butch (the body shop owner) said that if the body damage wasn't particularly severe, deployment of ONLY the driver's side airbag would not result in an insurance write-off.

I actually called 911 for a 2-vehicle accident one time. It was an early 2000s Subaru Outback and a 1998-2003 Toyota Sienna; I didn't witness the accident, but I heard it happen and it sounded like a bomb going off. Both vehicles were very obviously totaled with major front damage, though I actually rendered assistance to the woman in the Sienna and the van was still running. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, but neither one's airbag deployed and I'm pretty sure that the woman in the van had internal bleeding because the airbag didn't deploy; I don't think she died, but she was in a world of hurt. Thankfully, the local ambulance was headquartered right around the corner.

I have heard of airbags deploying for considerably lesser damage than what I saw at that accident scene, and if my airbag went off due to a minor collision, I would pay to replace the airbag before I let my insurance company total my truck.

Make sure you only bring it to a Toyota collision center no matter what the insurance company or anyone tells you

They will have the highest labor cost and make sure they use OEM parts. This should push you very close to them totaling the truck.

If totaled keep in mind that camper shells have gone way up in price.

It's stated in the OP, airbags did not deploy

I just dont see them totally this one, I think the frame is fine tho of course that would need professionally confirmed and no airbags blown so its really hard to say for sure

Had pretty similar damage - except on my truck the passenger fender was somehow still straight.

Cost somewhere around $9k to put it back together.

For a reference on estimate. This was a deer hit. Fenders and hood not damaged. Estimate was about $6500. Should pick it up next week.
I'm gonna guess from the pics you are $15,000 plus. Real close to a total loss amount.

10/10 times that cars a total. Frame damage doesn’t mean it’s totaled but if fixed correctly that’s exceeding your total loss threshold all day. Start shopping for a new truck

Surprised no one has suggested "plate front bumper" for this, or your next, Tacoma. Having an ARB front bumper on there would probably have reduced damage considerably.

Crow hit my headlight, $3500 Canadian, replace headlight, wheel well trim, repair and touch up of cracked plastic grill surround and plastic bumper just below headlight, touch up paint of front fender. My deductible was $300.

    Was a six month wait.

Air bags, we had a Tundra for work that a bear got into the cab and took a bite out the front passenger seat back. In seat airbag didn't go off, but $3000 Canadian for a replacement seat back in 2010.

Good luck on a 6 year old truck. Unless the policy has an endorsement to include OE parts, you have no choice in what they used. They can use good quality used parts if they wish. I would be pushing for this truck to be written off.

As @Chew said, I agree with him. Probably not. Something has to give . With the rigid arb bumper, it would easily be the frame . Since there’s no plastics that would absorb and disseminate the force, frame would have received more damage . It’s just hypothetical though but it makes sense.

Airbags were the only reason my 2016 was written off. It was good in the end though as I was paid out fairly and they would have used lots of aftermarket parts.

I am betting about 7000 in parts and paintwork alone. Also a frame pull. Then whatever little bits inside are busted. And labor costs. 12-15 at a reputable shop.
