Hello I have a quick question regarding front license plates. I live in a state that doesnt have them. However I would like to put a plate on the front. Is there a trick or do you have to buy a bracket from the friends at toyota, are there special screws? Please let me know what you guys with front plates already know. Thanks

    Joe

I've seen several members had problems with their front plates scraping the lower part of the bumper. Just food for though.

Nothing special needed. Go get yourself some license plate screws from Autozone or somewhere and find the two dimples in your bumper. Just screw them right in.

Jig is right, plates will scratch your bumper. I'd go buy some adhesive velcro or something and line the back of the plate wherever it's going to touch your truck w/ the soft side of the velcro.

Oh... and there is no bracket for our trucks. It's the only reason I don't have a front tag.

Be careful about where you put the screws. I've seen a lot of people with the holes in their bumper cover and the front tag does not hang straight. I don't know what people screw up but the clown I bought my truck from screwed it up and it's a pain in the a$$ to fix.

    Measure twice, drill once!

My dealer used 1/4" x 1" lag screws tapped directly into the plastic bumper piece, front and back.

There is a mod thread in here that uses a Dodge plate mount on the lower part of the bumper. It's looks pretty sharp and fiits well, but it may interfere with off-road clearance.
If you're interested, I can dig up the thread.

Since your state does not require it, way do you want to put one on? Our trucks look better without one, and no damage issues?
If you have to put a plate up front, might as well put a San Diego Charger Plate on there! :D

For all 2nd gen Tacoma owners, the front plate mounting bracket for 2006 dodge ram 1500 fits the front of the taco perfectly. Let me know if you want a picture of the install.

I found an aftermarket license plate back plate/frame at auto zone and installed it. My truck came from Nebraska and had the two screw holes drilled for a front plate. I didn't like mounting the plate directly to the bumper and just hanging at the bottom. With the back plate/frame it allows you to better attach the whole plate.

I put mine on the very bottom balance completely out of the way of the grill in any way to allow more air for cooling, I even bent or molded it to take the same shape as the bottom valance. Cops can still read it easily so no violations.

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
I put some foam weather stripping on the bottom of the front plate. No scratching the bumber for me:D

you don't drill, you just use the self tapping plate screws in the pre-cast dimples on the front bumper cover
I relocated mine but put some stainless screws in the holes left behind.

The 2 screws you are seeing are stainless dome head allen screws to fill the old plate holes, I have some black ones to install instead

Here is the photo of the 2006 ram 1500 p/u bracket from eBay. Straight out of the box onto the bumper. I was in Texas where a front plate is required.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to put a front tag on if you dont have to? Its mandatory Cali, which is the only reason I have one on. Otherwise it would be taken off before it rolled out of the lot.
