While driving straight down a hill (low grade) my front passenger side wheel/hub area starting making a catching sound and there was a visible movement each time. I stopped and couldn't see anything readily apparent. When I started moving again it had stopped but then started back up. Each time I stopped all the way the catching would stop for a while. It happened at a low speed and when I was moving straight (though not to say it won't happen when I'm turning). All the repair shops are closed for the weekend but I'm going to check my fluids.

Driving in 2wd causes no problem and I drove about an hour in 4wd this morning before it started.

    Any ideas?

Update: transmission leak like crazy. Topping it off and I'll get the seal replaced on Monday.

Why are you driving around in 4WD. I didn't think there were that many dirt/gravel roads in Tacoma to be able to do that.

I don't see the link between the trans leak and the trouble you are having.

Somehow I managed to leave the state and found myself in Colorado where snow and ice necessitated driving, on the road, in 4wd.

The total lack of any tranny fluid is clearly an issue and the leak needs to get fixed. After topping up the fluid the problem stopped for the little distance I test drove it. We'll see on Monday what else may be causing it if anything.

As I am not in Tacoma, I do not have access to my own work area, hence the reliance on local mechanics.
