I do all my customer's 1st gens in the shop with a 20 ton press. I have only needed to heat one, and I just put it in my oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees.

Serviceable as in a grease nipple for the wheel bearings?

Look on the bright side, at least you didn't buy a Colorado - they require the hub pressed out to replace brake discs.

No as in a typical bearing and race that you can pull out, clean, pack with more grease and reinstall.

My local Napa does. I was there recently and they said theyd do em. Think I'm just gonna do that instead of trying to do it myself. I think he said $40 a pop tho..

Mine are loud too. They don't spin rough though or make any more or less noise in a turn but it sounds like a helicopter is in my passenger wheel well when I'm at freeway speeds. Anyone know what is the best brand wheel bearing to get? Rock auto doesn't seem to list them for 1st gen pre runners

I just had to do the front wheel bearing on my 02. I don't get how everyone says you need a huge press, etc. since I did mine on a 20 ton HF press. Went smooth. Had to cut the dust shield but it all went back together.

At the time the front wheel bearing on my wifes subaru needed replaced too. I called a couple shops and they all wanted an hours labor to press out the old and the new bearing in. It was actually cheaper to buy the HF press than to have a shop do the 2 bearings.

Got my OEM bearing for $68 from McGeorge Toyota and National seals from the local parts store.

Got my koyo bearings off eBay yesterday and have been calling around shops to press em in and oddly enough I had like 3 shops tell me they wouldn't do it in my 1st gen, something about it being vary difficult. I find it amazing that someone who makes a living being a car mechanic won't do this work. I ended up finding a place who will do it I just hope they don't screw it up.

By the way how many seals do I need for each side? My bearings came with only 1 seal per side.

I used an OTC hub tamer kit on mine and had zero issues. I'm not sure why people saying they're using heat and 20 ton presses. That seems like overkill or someone didn't take the snap ring out

There are two seals per side if I recall. One of them is kind of spendy

Anyone have a part number for front wheel bearing seals on a pre runner

Is one larger than the other in diameter?

These are the one the local auto parts store said I needed. But I can't find any info online that agrees with them. Fsm part numbers don't match and can't find a photo of the inner seal searching google with the part numbers the fsm Cals out.

Pulling it all apart tomorrow and taking to the shop Monday to be changed so I'll update this thread with the correct seal info

Well, if its the same for 96-04, (mine is an 01)

    Seals:
    90312-95001 R/L

    Lock nuts
    43521-35010 R/L
(which are pretty much needed too btw. Could possibly be reused but one of mine had to be cut off as the tool couldn't get it off they said. Besides I think they're supposed to be a one time use lock nut).

I also got new snap rings:
    90521-99114 R/L

Idk anything about an inner seal and my diagrams dont show it. The only other things inside would be the non abs spacer(reusable) in place of abs rotor, abs sensor rotor(if abs) and grease caps.

Edit: Just had these done recently by Napa. They had difficulty with one and said it took everything their 20t press had to get it free.

I too, had/still have a vibe/hum/howl frt/pass. that I thought was bearings. (nothing wrong with originals once I got the spindles off but already had replacements so I went with it.) Changed them out. Still the hum. Shop (4 wheel dr. shop, should have been capable) said they had to use every bit of the press to finally get it to pop and I didn't trust that they may have damaged it going back in so I bought ANOTHER and had it done somewhere else ($50 labor) still hear the hum. (changed hub also this time)

An old guy I know has a '98 that has the same noise but much louder so I'm going to watch what finally breaks on him and go from there. It doesn't seem to always be bearings. Or at least not wheel bearings, it DOES sound like a bearing.

Point is: if the bearing feels good, something else up front CAN make a noise.
And yes, I miss non sealed bearings that you just re-pack. This is one of those another of those things that new designs may be great for keeping a vehicle 10 yrs. 20 yrs.....ehh, not so much. They're a royal pain.

edit: yes, I used Koyo's. each shop I went to said "man, there's nothing wrong with your old one".

Maybe for manual hubs, Ato hubs just use 1 per side. Of each wheel of course.

edit: I'm misreading or rather misleading, 1 per side of each hub. An inner and an outer. so 2 for each wheel. Like others are saying.

I'd better stay away from tech writing today.

From what I have seen there all the same from 95.5-04

Shit so your saying the prerunner has the lock ring? When I was looking at the part break down out of the fsm it looked like only the free wheeling hub has the lock ring. Do the seals I posted look right?

Anyone know where a online fsm is still available?

So far all the links Iv found only have the part break down available.
