I just had the rear u joint snap at the rear diff. I pulled the rear driveshaft and put it in 4 wheel drive to get front wheel drive. How long/fast can I get away with driving like this?

    TIA

You're technically good for as long as you want. Obviously you want to get the rear drive shaft fixed, but you aren't driving a ticking time bomb. I've seen buddies of mine drive for weeks at the time like this with no negative effects.

Ive driven from Moab to Socal and Colorado to Socal on different trips in front wheel drive. It can be very sketchy in an emergency situation where you have to make a sharp lane change or turn in traffic but you can do it no problem.

So I guess my fears of breaking a front axle with 100% of the torque going through the front end are unfounded. Going to order parts today. Thanks.

Unless you have an extremely large lift with crazy CV angles, you'll be fine for a while. There was a guy a few weeks back that snapped a CV after breaking/removing his driveshaft, but I wanna say he had 4+ inches with no diff drop.

Also maybe don't do FWD skids with it, be gentle and you won't break anything :burnrubber:

Edit: JK he had a 6" lift on 35s haha

No lift but I do have a bit of weight in the bed so I'm taking it easy. I just realized that if the front axles can handle the torque in 4 low then there's no reason it shouldn't be able to handle it in FWD high, should be about the same torque.

In high school, a friend broke the u joint in his Bronco about a mile from his house. We didn't have tools to remove the driveshaft, so we tied it up with shoelaces. I was only one not wearing cowboy boots, so guess whose laces were used

How much does fixing something like this typically cost?

I removed my rear driveshaft looking for a vibration and took a drive. Not sure why but driving along I nailed the throttle and almost wrecked the damn truck.

Drive like you're towing a heavy load. No harsh maneuvers, long gentle accelerations, and lower speeds. Get it fixed obviously but it's not like an emergency take-time-off-work-now situation, as long as you're aware that the truck will act a little differently under acceleration it can wait a week until you have the time.
