The composite bed is one thing that has me considering a Ranger over a 3rd gen Tacoma as my next midsize pick up, or a full size. I've never ran into any issues with the composite bed on my 2and gen, but I've never been fond of the plastic bed. Toyota had it right the 1st time with the steel bed found on the 1st gen.

You can give me all the official DOT things you like, the Taco is still not considered a 1/2 ton pickup. As was pointed out, these are largely slang classifications and hasn't meant the actual capacity in decades.

Tell you what, you consider your Tacoma as 1/4 ton pickup, and I will consider mine as 1/2 ton. I feel good with my consideration, I posted the payload capacity to back my "consideration" up in my earlier posts. :)

That was the only issue i had when buying one...the composite bed. While the taco's had them for years for years, i was always skeptical. Dealer convinced me as long as i never put any type of rack on top of the bed rails i'd never run into an issue for my type use. At least you'll not worry about rust, or treating the bed with rust inhibitors.
Never bothered to ask....but is the ranger like the f-150, or is it still steel?

That’s how I’ve always understood it. The term may have originally denoted true capacity, but now is basically a slang term for full size, heavy duty, etc. My Polaris Ranger side-by-side has a 1,500 lb payload capacity. I wonder where it fits in all this? :notsure:

Not sure, I guess the ranger is constructed from steel.
