Burt finally emailed me back regarding this issue after I sent him three emails, started a conversation with him on this forum and also texted him. In his reply to me after asking what it would cost to fix their mistake, he stated "$430 for another set of headlights. $120 labor. + return shipping". That's where I got $600, you said it, not me. I am not going to take this post down like Burt ask me to. You clearly stated that you are aware of the problem caused by the paint that you used and you still are not going to make it right, shitty customer service. If I knew your work was only going to last 18 months, I would of never spent over a thousand dollars for this upgrade. Good luck to you man. Hope you learn from your mistakes.

The paint used was not cheap or an inferior product. We used SEM KR010 Hot Rod black matte paint which is great stuff! We switched painters and thus switched paint. Now, a warranty for something like this has to be within reason and that's the point most of you are missing.
My point was the customer would not have been happy with a simple warranty repair which would consist of opening the lights, cleaning up the residue, and then resealing the headlights because of how much of a perfectionist he is. So I gave him a solution which ultimately would give him the results he wanted.

Asking us to replace headlight lenses with brand new ones is like me asking SEM to foot the bill. It's an unreasonable request.

We would be happy to get the lights, open them up, clean up the residue on the lens, reseal. Replacing housings and lenses is not reasonable.

Not giving him brand new lens is kinda understandable but it shouldn't cost him anything to fix a problem that was not his fault but as you stated and I quote "The problem comes from the paint we used a few years ago". That quote also kinda throws me off you say he lights are about 18 months but the paint is from a few years ago???

Brand new OEM headlights cost $450 a pair, add $300 for HID components, + paint cost, + labor. At the end of the day, the cost of custom lights is expensive yes.
Are we charging an arm and leg for our services? No. I feel what we charge for paint and labor is more than reasonable given the time put into each set.
There's a lot of variables that go into making each of every set of lights perfect. Unfortunately problems might come up.

We do our best to work with each customer to make the best of the situation.

You're lights cost $1200 so minus the $750 you're charging $450 for paint and labor. If I'm paying that much in paint and labor I'd expect it to last longer then 18months!

You talk about people missing the point but I think you're missing the point right now. This problem occurred not because of owners error but because of the paint. It looks to me like that it probably got sealed a little to early

Then you go to bash said customer about being a perfectionist well fuck I'd be a perfectionist too if I'm dropping $1200.
Then to top it all off you want to charge him $600 for repairs. That's absolutely nuts

I'd take that $600 you want to "fix" this guys lights and come pay you a visit.

As much as people charge for these lights you would think they would come with a lifetime warranty and a bottle of lube

And he's being "picky" really ? For the money he paid for those lights id be picky to

You don't need any lube just use that build up from the inside of your lights

Nothing to add except SEM HR black is less than $50 a quart.

$450 to prep and repaint headlight housings with what I assume is around 4 oz of paint and whatever necessary reducers is pretty petty when you admit an issue with the previous paint.

I honestly think it's pretty sad that after all the work your partner did to rebuild the reputation of your company it is being tarnished once again by your inability to handle minor situations like this while he is handling family matters

I understand the warranty side of things, but it isn't a failure of your third party components.

It's your workmanship that failed, due to a product you selected to use to complete that work. If you have since discovered that product to be defective in its use - you are on the line to replace it and eat the cost.

Unless you're a ethically challenged company, which you apprently seem to be.

Sometimes business owners make mistakes and sell something that isn't right. It isn't their fault, or the customers fault - but no one worth their salt tries to turn those situations into another way to make the customer eat crow.

That's on you - the business.

    Your work is the issue.
