The regular version does just screw into plastic. The extreme version screws into plastic as well, but additionally, it screws into a threaded aluminum backplate that gets installed inside the head unit.

Okay stupid question but I ordered a tech deck a long time ago and it got lost in a parts/project box I just dug it out ans want to do the install in the next couple of weeks. I think I lost the hardware as well (if there was any) and I know I lost the install instructions can anyone help me out on what the hardware was and the instructions? I believe its the extreme version.

I sent an email to the vendor just now so no rush just have a pile of stuff in the box so I am kind of lost on it.

It should come with 6 Phillips screws for screwing into the dash, 2 Allen bolts to attach through the lower portion of the head unit to the back plate, an aluminum "back plate" to mount inside the head unit, and the tech deck itself.

At least, that's how I remember it.

Quick question that I can't find an answer to (or possibly missed) but on the aluminum bar that goes in the head unit there are two 1/2 inch notches. Do they go towards the front of the truck or the rear?

If I remember correctly, the notches are to allow the plate to slide all the way down in between the electrical part of the head unit and the lower plastic piece. As you're inserting the plate, the notches should go first. This may not make sense if you have a model of the head unit where the plate doesn't need to be inserted down in the narrow gap. If that's the case, just check out the picture in the link above.

Nobody has a review? I'd be using this on off road conditions, I'm talking 60+ mph desert running.

I have the extreme duty version and it's very solid. I've never run a laptop on it but with a 10 inch tablet it's still rock solid. If you can avoid mounting solutions that cantilever the center of mass too far from the tech deck itself, I can't imagine it would give you any problems at any speed/conditions. Obviously if you take a heavy duty laptop and try to lever it out over the arm rest you're going to be putting a lot of strain on it but if you use it as intended, there are a lot of other things that would break on your truck first before the tech deck came loose.

I just bought a used one and wrinkle painted it to spruce it up.

I want to mount my S4 Mini and Glaxy Tab 10" to it. Both in Otter boxes.

I'm completely confused as to what RAM mounts to use. I am wondering if the X mounts are deep enough to accommodate the thickness of the Otter Boxes. Also, short or medium arms on the mounts?

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the Ram mounts web page you should be able to find a detailed description there on compatible ram mounts for your devices.

Love my TechDeck. I'll probably be getting rid of it soon, though. Not for any negative reasons but just going a different way with the cab setup. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1459197656.308916.jpg
