I don't know about fuel additives, but can comment on a tank additive I use.

    Gasoline.

Totally agree on the octane boosters. I stay away from any fuel additive that claims to boost gas mileage. Sea Foam does not make this claim.

Check walmart for Sea Foam. The local parts store charge almost twice as much as walmart. A can of Sea Foam is $6.97 and B12 Chemtool is $6.68. NAPA has Sea Foam listed online for $11.99.

Ditto. Techron Fuel System Cleaner! Twice a year when they change they gas for winter and spring.. I'm a C5 Vette guy too.

    https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c5-general-103/

Same procedure on my 06 Taco and 13 LaCrosse. With the Vette, the fuel sending pump will get crap on it and the gas tank gauge will read low or empty. Experienced this on my on 2000 Vette (OO) 2-3 times until I started using it. . Been doing this for 17 years.

Chris Fix and Project Farm have some good videos on using various fuel additives to remove carbon buildup and restoring compression. In general, yes, they are more beneficial than not, but the products tend to over exaggerated results. Top Tier gas has been shown to have some benefits to prevent carbon buildup.

I've learned a little about these this year.
    1. the cleaners work and will clean carbon and the fuel system.
    2. truck may run a little better
    3. can be used as fuel stabilizers
    4. still eats gas...........

The reason for this is that you and I live in the great State of California. While our gas is more expensive than most, it does come with a bit of benefit. California mandates a higher amount of detergent package additive for all fuels sold in the state. Have you ever seen fuel companies call themselves "Top Tier" fuel providers? While that term is mostly a marketing gimmick, it is true that they use a higher concentration and quality of detergent additive. Studies have shown that in California, their claim makes no difference because we already have that concentration requirement in all of our fuel. Now, there are always other variations such as the base quality of the crude that the refineries accept, transportation requirements, etc, that affect the overall quality of the fuel you pump into your tank. That being said, as long as you fuel up in California from reasonable quality companies such as Chevron, Shell, 76, etc, adding extra additive to your tank won't be improving much because it's already pretty dang clean.

Good answer... Costco is also "Top Tier" gas. The Moshen trucks are usually the brand I see delivering to Costco here in San Diego North County. The problem with this great California gas is that it is so diluted with detergents and ethanol it gives such low mileage figures. I would rather have 100% real gasoline than 90%. When I am traveling in Mexico, even with heavy camping loads, my mileage increases... no ethanol in Mexican gasoline. Down there, they use corn for food, not car fuel.

My wife has a CX-5. Great vehicle for fuel mileage and traveling. But in the manual it does say it requires 87 octane. I have noticed after awhile it does get a little sluggish pulling away from a stop light. So I add a bottle of sea foam or Lucas fuel system cleaner and it gets it’s pep back.

We have a station down the road, just outside a toll booth, that is the only game around between where we live and the city. My daughter remembers to fuel up literally when the car is screaming to fuel up and sometimes it is at that nasty gas station. Every single time any car in our family gets filled up there it spits and sputters to the point where I swear they are running a 50/50 mix of gas and water! Sea Foam clears it up every time. The Mazda is the most finicky vehicle we’ve ever owned as far as fuel goes but it rides and rivers great. My Taco simply wont run well off 87 octane. I have to run at least 91 in it.

No dude. Its because you live in a communist state that taxes the ever living hell out of everything. But if it makes you sleep better at night thinking the gas is 'better' then go for it.

The Mazda and my Xterra run best on 87 octane. My Tacoma seems to do better on 86. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a 2005 so it doesn’t need the higher octane but I check my mileage on almost every fill up and the lower octane always gives the better mileage.

They are mainly racing fuels being sold and at $8/ gallon or more, no thanks. 10% ethanol mileage will be cheaper than racing fuel in my truck that does fine at 87 octane, not 100 or more. Mexico sells 87 & 91 or 92 octane gas with no added ethanol and around $3.20/ gallon.

Up here in the Socal High Desert Race Fuel is easy to find either at the pump , 55 gal barrel or 5gal pale

Most of the Union 76 stations and VP Fuels gas stations have it readily available !!!

Gasoline is gasoline. All tier 1 gas is the same gasoline but the additives differ from company to company. All major brands and most lesser known
brands in the US are tier one. It is the additives that make gas tier 1. The basic gasoline for all brands is the same. The tanker trucks for various companies draw their gas loads from the same tanks. It is the additives they put in the gasoline that make say Shell different from ARCO, different from Chevron, different from Costco, different from 76 and so on.
Putting a bottle of fuel additive/cleaner in your tank periodically is definitely beneficial. It intensifies the amount of cleansers already in the fuel and helps clean deposits that may be resistant to the cleansing agents that are in your gasoline. Some are better than others. For cleansing look for an additive that has the most PEA in it. PEA is the primary cleaning agent. You don’t have to use it that often. Use it about the same time as your oil change or every other oil change.
The addition of ethanol is another discussion.
