Just curious what everyone is putting in their 3rd gen taco? I know according to information it has a 21.1 gallon fuel tank but I have never been able to put over 19 gallons in mine, even when the completely unreliable DTE display shows nothing. I'm just curious if anyone else is experiencing anything similar.

The DTE is 100% reliable because it’s designed to show empty when there is 3 gallons still in the tank for a reason. The fuel pump needs to be submerged to not overheat/run dry so that 3 gallons left is a safe guard to stop people from continuously running their tanks down. Really not recommended to use those 3 gallons on the regular since it can severely damage the fuel pump

The most I’ve put in was 18.5 gallons as the DTE just hit 0 miles remaining. I usually fill up when the gauge is between a half and a quarter (aka 3/8) tank remaining.

I've heard that running low fuel today isn't an issue for fuel pumps anymore. I'm not entirely sure how true that is, but I was told that fuel running through the pump is more than enough to keep it cool.

Seems to me if it’s still critical to keep the fuel pump submerged, then the engineers would facilitate that in the design... i.e., incorporate the engine feed line just above the pump, thereby keeping it submerged (making the last 2+ gallons unusable). The ability to use all/most of the fuel suggests your observation to be valid, otherwise Toyota is subjecting occupants to an unnecessary risk. I couldn’t find any manual reference to maintaining a minimum amount of fuel in the tank.
