The horizontal fuel consumption gauge (current fuel economy) on my "premium audio/etune system has one number on it, in the middle, indicating 15 mpg. Sometimes while I drive gently in sixth gear (MT), the indicator goes all the way to the right. So, does that mean I am (allegedly) getting 30 mpg at that moment, or should I cut back on eating the "magic mushrooms"?

I'm "averaging" about 21+ mpg for mixed city and freeway driving.

Oh for the days of analog gauges...

When it goes all the way to the 30 you could actually probably be getting 99+mpg!!!!

Essentially coasting with minimal fuel or going on a decline.

But it's instantaneous..so it doesn't mean anything.. All cars do this. Some cap it at 99(hence my 99+ comment). It is essentially an infinite value that the computer can't realistically figure out..

The more you can drive it with the gauge all the way to right, the better. It does factor in to your average though so aim for it but it's not much use.

I have found my "Average Trip mpg" number more representative to each drive I do.. It gives me a better small average of mpg without outlier numbers like the maxxed out "30" number.

On trip average I usually get 22-25 mpg on my commute.

I'm "impressed" with your use of quotes.
