It would be nice to have the option to replace the door with something like this.

What lube are you using for your fuel door hinge?

I use white lithium. Multiple rains and washes; hasn't come out yet.

The D&E of the gas door definitely leave something to be desired. When I first saw my truck I thought it was broken but was the same on the other new Tacos on the lot. My next thought was vandalism; unlikely though with the State Troopers' barracks across the street. Almost a dealbreaker. Then I took it for a spin & forgot all about it.

I have had the issue since the truck was new. It never worked right. Finally last night the bottom hinge connection broke loose. Should have brought it up with the dealer I guess. Thinking now that the hinge was not even working and the flimsy metal was just folding back and forth until it let go. Poor design.

wonder if this is happening more in rust belt areas? Luckily I lubed mine with white lithium right after I bought mine in feb of 19, still glides as smooth as silk when opening or closing. No salt or rust problems where I live.

In my opinion it is a very weak design, my 2012 had issues all the time with that stupid little door. I will be cautious with my new Tacoma to keep it clean and lubed.

This just happened to me, and I have no idea how. Gassed up, and then it wouldn't close. I'm in Canada, and Toyota wants $250USD ($300CAD) to replace it. The door comes unpainted, and half of that cost is painting it. It seems to happen so often, it must be some kinda design flaw. Oh, yeah, they won't cover it under warranty.

Cable tie where the hinge broke off at the top (works pretty good). Dumb me I knew it was stiff and intended to deal with it and waited too long.

Well, can add me to this list now. Opened fine, fueled up, went to close door and wouldn't. Turned counter-clockwise about 8°. Wtf?

OK having been through this little less than a year ago, they are available after market. If you ignore it getting harder to open/close it will break the little hinge off. Now for the good part can't tell you about every year but the door comes complete, unpainted. There are 4 tabs that bend over the frame that holds the painted panel on, carefully bend the tabs up remove the original painted panel and put it on the new assembly bend the tabs back down and you have a factory painted fuel door. I put the assembly on a blanket to bend the tabs back down worked fine with a flat blade screwdriver. Don't forget to lube the hinges every so often! I figured this out after the body gave me the door back and the paint didn't match!

The problem is that the wire that acts as part of the hinge is seizing up inside the two hinge points. Got to keep it lubed. If you feel it not wanting to close don't force it.

I use a small shot of Kroil every time I change the oil. Mine was getting rusty and Kroil fixed it. It continues to prevent the rust.

My fuel door also has done this Septemberish. I thought the gas jockey did something. I bent it back- looked pretty good, but it has happened again and again. I am curious as to if anyone heard of a recall for this. I’m also interested in what has been used as a lube- and how has this fix worked out? Did you bend it back and lube it, or did lubing it allow it to slide back into place? I am concerned that continuing to bend it back, the hinge will break, it’s pretty flimsy. I’m kicking myself, that I had not checked with the forum before, as this seems to be a common problem. Mine is a 2016.
    Thanx for any feed back.

The door hinge will eventfully break. You will learn that the hinge needs a shot of WD40 every so often. Hard lesion, mine started to get a little hard to close, said to my self you need to lube it next time I got gas it broke off, hind sight. I guess maybe if Toyota put a little plastic bushing in it that wouldn't happen but they didn't so it's up to you lube it. Have a look at my post from Apr 2 2022 that will save you some aggravation.
