So my fuel door is starting to rub for no aparent reason. You can see the 2 points on the door where the paint rubbed off.. i tried pushing on the inside portion to stop the rubbing, no luck.. anyone have any ideas on how to address this? Greasing the hinges did nothing, its like something warped or shifted..20180607_134420.jpg

Did you just install anything ? I think when I read on the 2nd gen gasshole thread, a new gas door is $30-$40 plus paint

Huh, funny you should post this today. My cover started doing the same thing on the bottom corner. Yesterday I did a search here and found multiple threads on the subject.

I ended up lubing the corner where the cover is scrapping as a temp fix. I’ll do some lateral prying towards the latch side with some no mar panel tools while the cover’s closed.

No mods, no accidents, it just started scrapping and screeching for no apparent reason..

It got that way because it wasn’t maintained, if you applied lubricant today in will not be fixed 10 min later. Give the stuff a chance to penetrate and work. You may need to force the hinge a bit.

Ironically enough, I just posted in another similar thread that was started today also.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fuel-tank-door-scratching.552905/#post-17993083

I believe the problem is caused by the "hinges" rusting then the binding caused by the rust makes the door change location ever so slightly, causing rubbing. The rubbing I and @HeyHoLet'sGo experienced was lower than what you show on your truck. Maybe the binding happens in different places and causes the door to rub in different places. My solution was to us white lithium grease and to pry the edge of the door back carefully to eliminate the rubbing. Here are the posts from the other thread:

I just repaired mine. Takes about 5 minutes. I used a small plastic panel pry tool to force the lip of the gas door back ever so slightly until I had clearance. Here is a similar tool being sold on Amazon.

[IMG]$6 AURELIO TECH 4pcs Auto Car Radio Door Clip Panel Trim Dash Audio Removal Installer Pry Toolhttps://www.amazon.com/AURELIO-TECH...385787&sr=8-5&keywords=plastic+panel+pry+tool

In the picture, I used the second one in from the left. I was careful with my tool placement and gentle with the force I used to minimize any chance of bending something I didn't want bent. I still need to get in there and repair the scuff marks but it is opening a whole lot easier as well.

Here are my pics of where it is scratched and of me using my glasses to show where I pried. [IMG][IMG] [IMG]

With the gas door shut, the bottom hinge side to the right and outwards just a bit, very easily...

    Edit to add photo:

Like this...Nudged it to the right and outwards like I said...Worked just fine.
No rust, I lube it regularly... bad design IMHO
If it comes back, I’ll probably just whack the inside sheet metal where it’s scrapping..I haven’t lost any paint yet and figure no one will see it unless they’re gassing up

Thank you. I just used a wrapped pry bar and carefully pulled the top of the mounting bracket toward me very slowly and held it once it moved a few mils. That seems to have done the trick, no more rubbing and i soaked the hell out of the hinges with WD, wiped it all down, then followed up with white lithium.. we will see that happens after a few fillups. Thank you!

Just came back from a 30,000 mile checkup and asked the guys to check my fuel door. VERY hard to close and just doesn't close correctly. They told me they had to order parts, paint, etc.: $395 to fix!!

Well...trying to fix this, one of the hinges broke off! Now, it's on by only one. I'm not a person likely to fix this myself and the dealer wants almost $400 to fix it. What other options do I have?

They told me it's not covered, even under the dreaded extended warranty.
