Yeah I don't think it's too bad. It's slow, but it works.

I think I hover around 16 to 17 mpg with AC on, mixed driving, but I drive it like I stole it plus E rated 265/70/R17 mud terrains and 300lbs worth of armor as well. Now in the winter you don't even wanna know how bad the mileage is.........

EDIT: I should add that I run the Blizzaks at 32 PSI; and the LT Summer tires at 50 PSI (makes for a harsh ride but keeps the heavier tire from sucking down my MPG. I run the heavy tire in Summer to avoid cutting down a tire on the gravel roads I find myself on in Summer. I've had too many friends destroy P-rated tires, so I went with the extra precaution; my tire guy advised me to run them at 50 for daily use, and air them down for soft stuff (beaches or mud).

So I checked my tires this morning and all 4 were at 27 psi. They're now at 40 so that should help. lol

Just took my 2012 2.7 5 speed manual AC 4x4 from Tulsa to Branson and back. 21.2 MPG with about 90% highway 10% city. Lots of up and down steep ozark mountains.
The same trip in my 2006 4.0 6 speed manual DC 4x4 was 15.9 mpg.
    I am loving my 2.7!!!!

Just got back from a nearly 2000 mile road trip, driving on interstates, back country mountain forest roads, local roads and highways and some heavy city traffic. The truck was loaded with my wife and me and enough camping gear in the rear and behind the seats that I could barely see with the rear view mirror. The truck is an AC, 4wd, manual, with LT 265/75 R16 Load Range E mud and snow tires (at about 37 psi), and with 5W30 oil in the engine. Speeds ranged from 10 to 65 mph, depending on the road. Did not use the air conditioning. The gas mileage for the trip was 25.3 mpg.

Somebody said earlier that it all comes down to what you want more power or mpg. I disagree, I love my 2.7 because it encompasses more of Toyota's legacy when it comes to small pickups. I like the characteristic of it, it's obviously slow but it feels like a little tank. I also like being the underdog and towing is fun in a way because you're barely making it. Plus everyone seems to think you can't tow for anything with it yet in other countries the exact same drivetrain/engine setup is rated at 6500 lb just like the v6 (the theory is that they're trying to upsell the v6 to dumb Americans that don't understand what is actually important in towing).

Also, the mpg difference has the potential to be a much bigger difference. Driving economically there is not a huge difference but if you hold both to the floor their will be a bigger drop in v6 than the little 4 cyl. The only reason why a bigger v6 motor only has a small drop in mpg's in the first place is because it has the ability to keep the rpms very low through it's much higher torque. When you rev them up though they really start to to get thirsty. Meanwhile 4 cylinders are used to revving higher even with normal driving in order to get any power at all from being a smaller displacement.

    I love 4 cylinders :)

18.3 MPG last fill up. I've since increased my lift height and filled up the tank the morning of the install, so will see in a few days/week if that has had any effect.

08 AC 4x4 I get right around 18. No lift but I do have 265/75/16 Cooper AT3's. I have short 10 minute commute to work so it doesn't have much of a chance to get warmed up.... I also have a fairly heavy foot.

My truck sat for a long time before I bought it (3-ish years) so I think there are probably things I could do to help improve it. Any advice from anyone?

Not sure but I am pleased with my mpg. I was getting 30 with my impala. And my Mpg was an avg over like 2k miles at least for the taco. Not in a rush anymore so I drive for mileage. Being a 4 manual I avoid interstate driving.
I'm using dash command with an iPhone plugged into the obd2 port.

But since I have raised the front
to re level it I have lost 1-2 mpg I may drive it a little harder since it's getting older and I also did a sub and can't hear my revs anymore.

How are you guys getting such good MPG out of the 2.7 liter? I have a 2009 regular cab and I am averaging 14 mpg. I am running 33's but everything else is stock. No lift.

Base model 2.7 5M, stock tires, rims, snugtop rebel plus another 200lbs tools so including me about 600lbs in the truck. Average highway speed is 70. If I have the Thule bars on the roof it’s 21-22, clean roof 23-24. Typical tank is 1/3 city 2/3 hwy miles so it goes up from there. 25 is no problem, best is 27(trip miles/gas to fill as I don’t have a display for it). Given that mileage is a sum of best conditions and less advantageous ones long haul trips could exceed that best. Advertised mileage was 21/24. Range to low fuel light(17.5-18tsp)>400, best was 450 but I think 500 is possible. I use CC but will often drop to 4th on grades @65. It won’t hold that on steepest grades or at altitude but I didn’t buy it for the power.

I assume the 33s are your problem. Those are much larger than the stock tires. So, not only do you have more rotating mass to spin/un-spin, but more rolling resistance as well. This is hurting your brakes as well as your MPG. It's not often said in these MPG threads, but it also helps to keep the MAF sensor clean.
    Also, nice necrothread revival.

After doing some research, I believe it is the cold air that is killing my MPG, almost cutting it in half. Over the summer/ warm air I was averaging 350-400 a tank! Now I am lucky if I get to 280ish. It sucks. I will look into that MAF sensor as well. Thanks for the heads up!
