I think 16 to 19 is an awesome city improvement. Also, 21 to 24 highway is pretty good too.
As stated before there shouldn't be an air dam in those calcs. Secondly, tonneau is an optional accessory, not standard equipment. No manufacturer has ever based epa ratings on accessories. However, this IS the first accessory that improves mpg so maybe they will.

Either way, it's a bit hard to believe that the 3rd Gen with improved transmission, engine, aerodynamics, and 300 lbs less weight would get the same hwy mpg as 2nd gen. So you're telling me the 2nd Gen will actually get 19/21? Come on Blue.
At top speed I do think they would but again I don't think those calcs are with either of those options. If they're willing to give away a free tri fold locking tonneau just for another mpg though, I'm all ears.

I get 21+ MPG highway pretty much all the time (with exception of cold winters)
I get 15-18 MPG in the city traffic all the time.
Original EPA rating for 2007 4x4 Auto V6 4.0 was
    City 18 MPG
    Hwy 21 MPG

Keep in mine BlueT brags up his 5.7L Tundra as getting 18 mpg too lol. I never got better than 19 mpg at any time with my Tacoma when it was stock. Either way, these new 2016 numbers are about a 10-20 percent improvement, which is pretty good. Like any vehicle upgrade though, it won't cover the cost of buying a new one. It does however equal a few extra dollars a year when you compare a 2015 and a 2016.

Btw I'm looking at the display on my wifes truck as she drives us to a family meeting, 11.3 L/100 km. That's almost 21 MPG overall. I hope the Tacoma can beat a V8 gas job with a similar level of technology. Similar aerodynamics, less weight, similar engine technology but V6. No reason this new Tacoma shouldn't be in the 20's overall.

11.1 L/100 km. Tacoma should do better.

Most people with EcoBoosts motors report less than EPA figs. Power is great from virtually all who own them though.

I don't know why mid sized trucks don't get better mpg than full sized, it makes no sense to me, but regardless yes I hope the new Tacoma at least returns average tanks of 20+. It's a little ridiculous that bigger heavier trucks get better mpg with bigger engines. I've asked the question before in detail and no one replied.

The picture is from our V8 Coyote F150. The Ecoboost basically gets mileage based on how you drive, if you drive conservatively you get EPA. If you drive it like you stole it then your mileage is what you expect from a motor with over 400 ft-lbs of torque.

It makes a lot of sense to me. MPG tech costs money. Full size trucks are more profitable and expensive (and sell more) so naturally you get newer and more advanced tech in large trucks. Part of the mid size appeal is less cost so to keep costs lower you get less overall tech. Also, they don't want smaller less profitable trucks to cannibalize their larger and more profitable full size pickups.
You can also see this within the mid-size class itself. The 4 bangers in the new Taco and Colorado get roughly same MPG as the larger more advanced/costly V6. It's economics. Toyota, like every other automaker, is out to make money.

If you stay out of the boost you can get the EPA numbers. But there is something about a full size hitting 60 in under 6 seconds that really hurts MPG.

The 2012 3.5L Eco is rated at 14/19 and getting that is not hard.

I might need some alone time while I watch the videos. The only thing that would pull me away is if Scarlet Johansen busted down my front door and said "you, me, now"
