I was trying to figure out the average fuel consumption rate for a 3rd gen Tacoma/ Seems "modern" engines consume about 0.2 to 0.5 gallons per hour while in idle. So using your numbers and a full tank, you're looking at about 86 hours of idle time. It's crazy to think of such a scenario where that would be necessary but I use a propane generator to charge up my battery power stations that keep my house powered during outages. In an emergency, it's good to know that I can charge my power station at 400w/hr directly from the truck. Since I have a 5000w power station, it would take 12 hours to fully charge, (w/ truck idling) so I would have roughly 6.75 full charges before running out of gas.

And then I read this.... That 30 minute cutoff is a problem :( I wonder if there is ANY way to bypass this setting...

    here's some great info:

    -double click method damages things
    -excessive idle is bad
    -breathing exhaust fumes is bad
-you paid $40k for a $20k truck. You have money for a power station.

This is interesting for the snow storm situation, but I just have never idled my truck for any type of extended time period. Just doesn’t feel right!

I have never heard of the engine shutting off after 20-30min like some of you are stating? Just doesn’t seem right. You’d think if this were true it would be clearly spelled out in the owners Manuel . Anyone ever find this statement written in the Manuel?!

It appears to be a safety feature added in 2020 for models with push start

The one time I've sat idle in my truck it auto shuts off after an hour.
Does having the inverter on override that?

Um, sleeping in a idling vehicle is not a good idea.

    Lol judge much?
    Example...
I went underground in a mine in southern illinois on 2nd shift to troubleshoot a machine. I came out 16 hours later and was up 8 hours before that to drive to the mine. Nearest hotel is 40 miles away. It's seven degrees F.
I left the mine property and as soon as the truck got warm i got sleepy. I pulled over into a wide spot on a two lane highway, cracked a window, locked the door and pulled my coat over me. I woke up five hours later and ate some food and drove home.
    What would you have done?

Where's the judgement? It's called advise. I thought it was common sense, but I guess not. If you do some research, I don't think you will find many sources saying that it's a safe practice.

my 2021 did not shut off after over an hour of idling. had to charge some things on a camping trip...this is with the 2TR-FE (2.7L). i had the "utility package" so maybe i didn't get all the fancy new features.

I don't have to be told to not eat Tide Pods or have warning labels on hot coffee either. I am not of that generation.

Some people have likely died due to carbon monoxide poisoning while sleeping in a car, but I’m guessing (without fact checking myself) that more have died of exposure to 7F weather.

I remember back when I was a kid being told that when caught in a blizzard in a car to check the exhaust tip periodically to make sure it is not buried in snow. I have never needed to worry about this though

Had a power outage. Since I didn't have a genny, I always figured I'd use the inverter in the bed of the truck in a pinch. So I did. Powered my home office for ~3 hours. Didn't see an appreciable drop in the fuel gauge, but it got the job done. Good to know the fuel rate.

Won't hesitate to use the Taco as an emergency generator again.

4th gen does not have start stop or I would not have purchased… I can confirm that it will turn off while idling long durations however

Sure is! Set the parking brake, possibly chalk the vehicle tires and put the transmission in "Neutral". Seems to only apply to the 2020+ with the V6.

I can add that the thirty minutes does not apply if you leave a door open too. Left my passenger door open with the engine running in Park and it ran for 40 minutes and did not shut off.

It's not good for any vehicle...fills the neck and dumps into the charcoal canister, eventually saturating it. Just pull the pump out when it clicks.
