I searched and all I found was a couple threads with 90 pages of not answering the question.

I just traded a 14 FJ for a 17 Taco, double cab TRD OR.

The FJ was rated 17/21 and looking at it I figured it had to be one of the least aero vehicles ever made with its vertical windshield. I got 19-20mpg on a pretty consistent basis, sometimes 17-18 if I was off the highway for a whole tank.

While I definitely didn't buy the Taco looking for great fuel economy, with it being rated 18/22 I kind of expected it to be at least the same and maybe marginally better on average. But so far I'm getting under 18mpg average, and most of my miles so far have honestly been highway. The odometer is still under 1000 miles.

So my question is, is this pretty much what other owners are seeing? Does it improve as the engine wears in and the transmission calibrates? (thinking back, i do seem to remember the FJ getting better with time)

Mostly I'm wondering, is there something wrong with my Taco and should I take it back to the dealer and have them check it out? Or is that a complete waste of time?

    Thanks in advance :)

Everyone will vary with responses. But the best I ever averaged stock was 21 mpg. But that was on a 400 mile trip on flat ground.

Typical average before lift and armor was 17-18. After lift/armor I average 16-18 depending on driving.

Yeah I'm not sure how many people run them stock, good point. I'll probably keep mine basically stock until the warranty is done... or maybe not... :D

Keep rpms under 2000 in highway, I have been able to easily get 22-23 mpg on long trips even with some traffic.

Mpgs take a hit if you are constantly accelerating just for the lolz instead of trying to keep a smooth consistent pace.

I just use cruise control, I drive it the same way I drove the FJ, maybe that's the problem. :p

This day and age it's surprising these trucks have this bad gas mileage.

Ha, right! Next week I bet you'll have tires and wheels on order!

I usually get around anywhere from 16-20mpg.

Sounds about ball park mpg to me OP. And I don't think it'll get much better after break-in.

But, change your oil regularly to keep friction in check, keep you tire air pressure a few lbs below the max load rating on tire side wall, filter clean and you could see 23-25 mpg on the hwy when the weather and gas mix formula is right for the season and you'll smile!
    Cheers!

The FJ was a Tier 2 test
    2017+ Tacomas are a Tier 3 test.

Besides, the tests are not meant as real world estimates. They are a comparison to other vehicles in lab conditions.

I have a TRD Sport Access cab and it currently has almost 6000 miles on it. It is one year old and I have been keeping a log of gas mileage since about the first 600 miles. I don't rely on the onboard computer. I use an app on my phone and record every fill up and the corresponding gallons and mileage. My truck started off at 22.8 mpg. It has gotten as low as 20.7 mpg and has mostly stayed around 21.3 mpg ever since. This includes freeway, highway and around town driving. It doesn't seem to vary much (21.4 is a very common number per fill up). I don't do alot of cruise control driving either. I have never looked at my computer mileage so I don't know how it compares. I keep track of the miles driven and gallons to fill up every time and have since the truck was 600 miles old. I usually go about 250 miles between fill ups. I do not use 4 wheel drive very often at all.

I am pleased and I hope it stays that way.

BTW I have an six cylinder automatic.

    Hope this helps you!

Happy with mine. Stock aside from shell, Prinsu rack and a few other minor tweaks. So far this winter I’ve been getting between 18.5 and 20.7 or so. Best in the 13 months I’ve owned it is over 22. All these tanks include one or more trips up the canyons (Parleys, BCC, LCC) skiing on weekends. I usually drive around 80 mph on my commute which is mostly highway but a bit of city as well. Photos are from today. Cut this tank a little tight but pulled in with 1mile to spare. The 2 taller bars are tanks that are 89 ethanol free. Others are all standard 88 octane. Truck has 22k on the odometer. New tires later this summer. Thinking Wildpeaks in 265/75/16 to maintain some MPG.

Edit* I also manually calculate and compare to the onboard computer. Both match nearly identical. I’m ocd and reset trip A and eco computer every tank.

I have had both FJ and Tacoma. I never saw above 18 mpg on either, and that's following the >2k rule on hwy.

Its winter. You are using winter gas. You will pick up 1-2 mpg around March.

I’ve seen 24 stock and as low as 12 after the lift. Just depends how and what you drive on. I average about 17.5 after the lift on the highway.

My truck is stock except for a hard folding tonneau (I've ran without the cover and seen no discernible difference). I average 20 - 21mpg. My daily commute to work is about 10mi one way, mostly highway, speed 55 - 60 most of the way. I generally get a little better than that on longer trips if I keep it 70 or under on the interstate. I've never had a tank under 19, best was 24.

I've been tracking using fuelly since my second fill-up. If you browse vehicles and filter for your year/engine combination you'll see a lot of variability, I think personal driving style makes a big difference in these trucks.

I've never seen more than 18.5. My OR is stock. Driving on the highway leads to WORSE mileage in this vehicle because if you want to maintain a speed of 75mph+, you are constantly going to be deep in the gas pedal to get a downshift or two.

I've finally come to the conclusion that I should just leave truck in S mode and have ECT on at all times. MPGs barely suffer and it's a lot easier to keep up with interstate traffic.

So far I'm getting 18-21 MPG, with 20 being the average. I get the worse MPG when driving on the interstate over 70 mph (18 MPG on a tank, usually), and best MPG when driving on state highways at 50-60 MPG. On flat 50-60 MPH roads, I usually get over 21 MPG.

I like getting good MPG and plan to keep my truck as close to stock as possible. I think the truck's drivability and MPG did improve slightly after putting about 5000 miles on, but it could be my imagination.

It'll do better in the warm weather.

    For me: Cold=20mpg
