On a 2007 tacoma 1grfe, i have a weak reading on the fuel pressure. Is there a way to distinguish between a bad fuel pump and a clogged filter? I understand they are both in the fuel tank. Though I don't know what the filter looks like.

Trying to find a replacement oem fuel pump kit only comes up with the Denso fuel pump unit. Not the whole assembly.

I thought I would replace the filter also but I dont see any standalone filter, unless it's part of the fuel pump on the 2007. Or is the filter something I can just clean and reinstall once I open the fuel pump assembly.

What was the reading? Can't buy a stand alone filter. URD sells a kit that replaces the pump and adds an inline filter.

Not really a replaceable or serviceable component by itself

Mine reads 25psi. I wont wait any longer and will just go ahead and replace the pump. Thx.

@Torspd, that was an informative link. Surprised to see how dark the fuel looks out of the filter.

I dont have any info on how much such a dirty filter would drop fuel pressure, if any. I am thinking the pump is building the pressure after the filter and so likly a bad pump. Will just replace the pump and see what happens. Thx.

Glad to share. When you pull yours apart, take some photos of what comes out of the filter.

There is no filter. Low pressure typically means bad pump.

I am slightly confused by what you mean by, "There is no filter."

I may be wrong but from what I’ve read, 2nd gen did not come with an independently replaceable fuel filter, such as a $40 canister elsewhere on the truck that would be replaced on a service interval like other cars that have it, as maintenance

but rather a mesh weave bag integrated into the fuel filter in tank
If that is the case I wouldn’t even call that a “built in filter” as it’s not replaceable, probably not enough, and every fuel pump has that, with a separate canister in addition to it (that the 2G doesn’t have)

if that is the case, I’m curious if one can be added
Simply cutting lines to splice one in

    IMG_0838.jpg

I’m guessing any low pressure filter would be compatible

the only obvious differences I’ve seen is differences in price reflected by ports on the filter
-car with separate regulator at engine use cheaper filter with less ports
-car without regulator has it built into the filter making it cost more, with more ports

It is integrated, and not a "serviceable" filter. The whole unit has to be replaced. However, the media is a fine material for good filtration. As well as a large amount of surface area. This is why it can last for so long.

It does however get saturated just like any filter will. Thus the upgrade to something that can be easily replaced becomes valuable. With that, from some old research that I did, the Aussies service life for their OEM replaceable fuel filter was somewhere between 20-50k kilometers. That would need to be checked over again, as that was years ago.

OEMs on a separate fuel filter generally spec 40k mi interval

def possible to add filters if it works right
Folks add add oil and fuel filters to diesel

last car ran an added P/S filter (inline Magnefine), going to add the same to the truck

a cheaper non regulator filter with just inlet and outlet ports would probably work
after ensuring whatever connection method used is strong enough for the lines to stay on under pressure

might work to find a spot, cut lines, add quick disconnect fuel line fittings on the hoses secured with ear type clamps
according to Google pump on pressure is 38-44 PSI

    https://4wdadventurer.com/4wds/land-cruiser-build-fuel-pre-filter/

apparently 22RE pickup comes with one and crimped lines with banjo bolts
sounds like overkill to handle the pressure and possibly old tech before quick connect came out, harder to change

then again the idea is reliability and banjo bolts to replace crush washers using a wrench sounds more reliable than quick connects that need special pliers and break from being plastic

    IMG_0845.jpg

    diesel filters probably differ

I know generic fuel filters exist but never used one

    IMG_0846.jpg

looks like URD might sell such parts already:

Adding an inline filter doesn't bypass the one already in the thank though.. The one in the tank will be the first one to get plugged and create fuel delivery issues

Curious if that was gas or diesel? Id imagine diesel - tends to run dirtier than gas

This was for their 1GR. I have posted a photo somewhere on this forum, long ago.

I dealt with low fuel pressure somewhere in the 200,000 mile range, had to drop the tank and have the entire unit replaced with the Denso fuel pump. Maybe the sock is a part you could buy but it makes no sense it’s all incorporated into the fuel pump. You have to pull the tank to get to it or takeoff the bed either way it’s a lot of work just replace the pump.

Finally changed the fuel pump today. The truck runs so much more smoothly and responsively at 240k miles.

Ordered denso fuel pump kit for $145 from Walmart.com. The socks which acts as a filter is on the other side of the white plastic unit.

Tried doing this by removing the truck bed, only to have 2 of the bolts head get stripped. Decided it wasn't worth the frustration and changed plan and removed tank from underneath. It took about 6 hrs as it was not easy taking off the quick connects and also removing the gas tank bolts. In reinstall i was not able to get the rear tank belt bolt tightened fully. There is still a gap between the belt and the bolt that i will need to correct. Checked for leaks after starting, going on the road and adding some gas. Everything good so far.

For comparison there is a pic of the old and new sock. The gas in the tank actually looked fairly clear. So not a question of bad gas. Clearly a bad pump.20240101_172529.jpg

why not use the URD kit with a better pump and separate replaceable filter

The URD kit is an interesting idea. I figured that getting 240k on the original pump was great and replacing it oem ensures another 240k without additional mods. The engine on the truck is great but the body is showing wear and tear. Taking off bolts was really difficult. Just happy to keep it running.

I heard or read somewhere that you should always keep your tank a quarter full it's suppose to be easier on your pump. Does that make any sense?
