Fuel filter replacement; gas doesn't stop coming out of lines

    Fuel systems are under pressure. Even if you run it until the engine stalls, there is still a reasonable amount of pressure still in the system. The smaller a spot the fuel has to come out, the more it will spray. Imagine holding your thumb over a water hose. Same basic principal. Once you have backed off the fuel line enough to bring pressure down to zero, you should have minimal amount of fuel leaking out at that point. If all you do is crack the line loose, then it will spray a bit until the pressure drops, which takes longer if all you do is crack the line.

    Like Bama said, it will spray if it's cracked slightly. I loosened mine really fast so I had gas run down my arm but it wasn't the first or last time so I didn't care. I did need a shower after though.

    I understand the principle but it was to the point that I literally could not bear to lay under the truck and keep loosing the two compression nuts until I could remove the fuel filter.

    Not to mention, environmentally speaking, I was spraying gasoline all over my driveway to the point it was actually running downhill.

    Oh, and FWIW if you are going to remove the fuel pump relay (aka circuit opening relay), mine was not located behind the dash by the fuse box assembly. Mine was located behind the dash next to the steering column.

    I had to remove that lower dash panel to access it.

    The EFI fuse should be in the main fuse block under the hood :confused::confused::confused:

    I think that'd probably work better than the pump relay

    I didn't do any of that removing relays and running the engine until it stalls. I did park it with the gas cap open and let it sit for 3 hours. The pressure will dissipate. Just got a small dribble when I cracked the lines.

    I just replaced mine. If you can let the truck sit overnight and then change it do that and you should be fine. You should get a cup or two of gas drip out and that's it. Leave the ignition in off position. I had leaks after installing new filter so just keep tightening the nuts until the leaks stop with fuel line pressurized. Also a 3/4" wrench will work just fine instead of a 19mm.

    FWIW I just replaced mine with the gas gauge on E.

    It only dripped a bit... then drained. No spraying issues at all.

    And I didn't bother removing the relay and starting the truck until it stalls. All I did was remove the gas cap.

    How often should the fuel filter be changed? Mine just rolled 96K and I have no idea when if ever it has been changed. Also when should the spark plugs and wires be changed? Thanks in advance.

    Well Toyota claims it's a lifetime part... which makes no sense to me. How can something that filters never be changed?

    On the WIX filter box it says to change it every 20,000 miles.

    I just changed mine after 90,000ish miles and it was pretty cruddy and noticeably different with a new filter in line.

    The FSM claims that genuine Toyota spark plugs are "designed to last at least 60,000 miles"
